Highlights
  • Monteith’s Brewing Company - Monteith’s Brewing Company has been brewing on the West Coast of the South Island for 150 years (which is a long time by NZ standards). Originating in the small town of Reefton, years of development & growth have led us to this contemporary, architecturally designed building in Greymouth that pays homage to our proud heritage & looks to our future.

Monteith’s is now the leading craft beer brewery in New Zealand, & one of the best indoor visitor attractions on the West Coast thanks to our great hospitality, prompt service & wonderful stories … not to mention, our beers, ciders & brewery tours. The best way to get the full Monteith’s experience is to take a 45 minute fully guided brewery tour.

Let us take you on a journey to explore the history & heritage of Monteith’s & let you in on the secrets that have led to major success for our beers & ciders. On this brewery tour you will explore the art of brewing & how we brew here at Monteith’s Brewery in our modern brew house. Some of the recipes we use have been around since Monteith’s inception, you can get up close to the brewery & the ingredients & you might even get an up close view of the brewers in action. You will get to understand the full production process, right through to our packaging plant, & get a glimpse at the old & the new ways of bringing this good beer to the people.

This tour is not just for beer fanatics, it is designed for all levels of beer knowledge. Before we finish you’ll get a hands on lesson on how to inspect a beer by smell, sight & taste, & will leave feeling educated for your next craft beer purchase.

But its not over yet, you’ll then be given three Monteith’s Brewery fresh tap beers or ciders with tasting notes to guide you, so you can practice your new knowledge with your pairs as you enjoy our world class range. Make the most of our Qualmark Gold awarded venue, & order some thing from our sharing plate menu, expertly matched with your beers by our head brewer & head chef. You can order your meal before your tour starts, & the team can have it ready for you when you finish.

Your passport also includes discount vouchers for other world class West Coast attractions such as Sky Diving at Hot Pools in Franz Josef, West Coast Water Tours, Treetop Walk and Shantytown Heritage Park.

The tours leave daily at 11.30am, 3pm, 4.30pm & 6pm (excludes some public holidays).

We advise that you arrive to the Brewery at 60 Herbert Street Greymouth 15 minutes before your selected tour time, & make your way to the bar to confirm your arrival. The tour takes a total of 45 minutes (approx).

There are child tour passes available for purchase at the brewery. Covered, flat sole, non-slip shoes must be worn on the tour. Monteith’s is wheelchair friendly. Mandarin & french translated tour notes available.

Mature traveller's meeting locals - Did an afternoon tour after arriving on the train from Christchurch, collecting cycles, finding our Airbnb, a cup of tea and then the Brewery tour. Great tour with small group, we all stayed on after the tour and had drinks and dinner together. Good staff, very knowledgeable and friendly. The beer tasting was good as was dinner and company.

Great value! - What great value! An interesting and informative tour of the former brewery here at Monteith's followed by a tasting and a take home 6 pack! About the best $35 I've spent on my NZ holiday so far! The tour guide Marie was extremely informative and passionate about beer and the local area!

One moment let it down - The Brewery tour was very good and interesting. The explanation of the brewing process was good, though quite fast - had it been done in front of the process diagram on the wall, it would have been better. Our guide was enthusiastic and knowledgable. The smelling of the hops and barley grain, and then tasting the beers, was interesting and enjoyable. It was a nice touch to then gift each tourist a 6-pack of mixed beverages of their choosing. We stayed to have dinner. As I stood next in line to order some food, another patron decided to jump the queue and order his meal. I protested to him and the female staff member serving him - but she just allowed it to happen. Instead of serving me, she sent me to another register where I had to further wait for service. As I walked to the other register, she apologised to the guy to who had jumped the queue! In my 15 years of hospitality experience, and as a general customer/consumer, this remains one of my top pet-hates - queue jumping and staff not respecting their customer's patience. The food was nice, though poor staff ettiquette resulted in a disappointing end to what was otherwise an enjoyable visit, hense a 5/5 rating reduced to 3/5.

Disappointed Customer - Myself and my cousin ate at this restaurant the week before and the meal was a ok, we went back yesterday. I order the ribs I was very disappointed with them, the ribs had been boiled, they were not fulling off the bone there was no tender meat on the bone, they were tough stringing still had the membrane underneath and the sauce tasted like shop bought sauce. Dessert was not a gooey chocolate brownie it was very dry and really should be called a chocolate cake.I did ask to speak with the cook I was told he was coming out to speak to me but I had to go to him. I had spoken to the cook he wasn't helpful he was quite rude and arrogant. This is the first time I have left a review and myself being a cook I would listen to the customer

Not actually a working brewery - Great pub but the brewery stopped brewing some time ago. This wasn't mentioned when we booked and we found out part way through the tour.

Terrible experience - This is not enjoyable and people should not be charged for this. The beer tasting is of two choices only and no other tastings for cider or other types of beer on offer. The tour guide was an amateur reading from a boring sheet and mumbled so couldn't hear either. Don't go and waste your time it's really poor value.

Very dissapointing tour, waste of time. - We were very disapointed with this tour,The tour guide was new but he had no idea what he was talking about,He was reading from a sheet of paper and stumbled over the hard words,He couldnt answer any questions. We just walked around a set up of how the process should go.The only thing that was good at the end was the beer tasting and you get to choose six bottles of your choice,Even then he just sat there and played on his phone.Luckily we had a member of the tour party who had a bit of knowledge and answered some questions. What a let down.
