Lovely tour with an absolutely amazing guide! - Marlon was absolutely amazing. He contacted us a day beforehand and made sure we were ready to go, and was gracious and friendly even as early as we started the morning of. He was a very courteous guide, making sure everyone felt safe and enjoyed themselves on the hike, while maintaining a good pace for all involved. Our group was 4 people in total which was great. Marlon took his time explaining Guatemalan culture in general, the area of Tikal and its long past, and answer what seemed like endless questions from our group! He was very knowledgeable about local wildlife and we were able to see multiple types of monkeys, birds, and other local wildlife. He moved at our pace and we never felt rushed or in one place for too long. He even made a quick and kind detour to the bathroom while I wasn't feeling well during the hike. I would suggest to anyone to seek out GEM trips for their Tikal tour. The sunrise morning hike is especially worth it, allowing you to see the sights before the park gets busier during the day, and waking up with the animals before the large crowds scare them away!

Great tour, Highly Recommended! - This tour was everything we hoped for. Marlon is a true professional. He is so knowledgeable, and thoughtful. The tour is well planned with snack breaks and bathroom breaks. He knows everything about the history of the Maya, as well as the flora and fauna of the jungle. We spotted spider monkeys and tons of tropical birds. He brought binoculars for us to use. The other tours were in big groups and left the temple before the sky cleared, so the best views were all ours! If you are planning the long trip to Tikal, this is the guide to choose. Cannot recommend enough!

Amazing experience with great and knowledgable guide Marlon! - We had an amazing time with Marlon on this tour. He was so knowledgable, friendly and willing to answer any questions that we had. He brought some great packed breakfast and food for us. Watching the jungle wakeup was an amazing experience that I would recommend to everyone, and it was also amazing walking around Tikal in the morning when there weren't as many tours there. Marlon was absolutely brilliant and a great tour guide, we can't recommend him enough. Thankyou very much for a great experience, one of the best things we did in Guatemala!

WOW! This is the tour to book! Marlon is a STAR! - So if you are looking to book a tour of the Mayan ruins in Tikal, look no further. This is the one you need. The tour is so ridiculously well operated it went without a hitch and was extraordinarily easy to navigate. The real gem is the guide and president of this operation, Marlon. He cares so much about the ruins that he has dedicated his life to conserving Tikal and educating folks like you and me. He is well respected at the ruins and does his up to most to ensure your trip is a success from start to finish. I could not write more highly of Marlon and his tour.

Tikal—amazing! - This was an amazing experience! Our guide Marlon, was outstanding. He provided tons of info on flora, fauna, and culture. He had vast knowledge in all three areas. Marlon, graciously answered all our questions and encouraged us to ask more. Coffee and fruit was provided before we set out, and an authentic breakfast was provided after sunrise. Unfortunately we did not see the sun rise—it was cloudy. We were prepared for that based on other reviews. It did not matter. After walking through the ruins and climbing many, we enjoyed an authentic lunch at the on-site restaurant. Transportation to and from was good. Do not hesitate to book with this company, GEM. Highly recommend.

To guide or not to guide…that is the question? - I’ll be the first person to admit, I really don’t enjoy being on an organised tour! I prefer to go at my own pace rather than being hindered by a group of people, so I usually avoid booking tours and will generally fly solo. However, after doing a lot of online research and reading a few convincing travel blogs, the general consensus was that to experience Tikal properly, you need a guide. Two separate blogs had both mentioned GemTrips so I clicked on the link, read the blurb and decided to go ahead and book! And I’m so glad I did! I booked the Sunrise Tour, and was met at 04:00am outside the designated hotel by my guide Marlon. His van was spacious and comfy with working aircon. I asked Marlon how many other people would be in our group and he replied ‘none!’ He explained that this was his intended day off and I was the only person who had booked the tour with him that day, his tour groups usually consist of a maximum of nine people. Upon arrival at Tikal Marlon parked up, and offered a breakfast of fresh piping hot coffee, banana and a savoury cookie, and we then proceeded to walk into the site. Although it was still pitch black at this point, Marlon described in detail the history of everything we passed along the way, and the route we were taking. His knowledge was quite astounding! Then we reached Temple IV and climbed to the top to watch the sunrise. There were perhaps around forty other people at the top and everyone respected the silence. We could hear Howler Monkeys as well as various birds as the light dawned and the sun gradually became visible in the distance. It was a magical experience and although still quite misty, the views were spectacular. We had a typical Mayan brunch of tortillas filled with refried beans which was delicious, then headed down to explore the rest of Tikal. For me, there were three amazing things that occurred with having Marlon as my guide. Firstly, because it was just the two of us, Marlon took me off the tourist track and into some of the surrounding jungle areas to show me parts of the site that no one else really gets to see: unearthed original dwellings, administrative buildings and wells, and mounds that are yet to be excavated and explored. Secondly, I’m a huge Star Wars fan so later in the day, Marlon took me back to the summit of Temple IV to get a photo from where the original shots from A New Hope were taken, and he very patiently took lots of pics of me until I got the one I wanted! And finally, having Marlon as my guide provided an amazing insight into the Mayan history and culture that I’d never have otherwise learned! His knowledge was amazing but not just that, also Marlon’s passion for the history, culture, wildlife and conservation really shone through. He was keen to point out all the wildlife we encountered and explained every part of Tikal in incredible detail! We finished the tour with a delicious local lunch before heading back to Flores. So to summarise, I’m so glad I booked a guide! GemTrips were superb from start to finish, and Marlon was amazing. And although the price seemed expensive when I initially booked, it was worth every penny and then some! If you want to experience Tikal in the best way possible, book Marlon’s company GemTrips, I guarantee you won’t be disappointed!
