Highlights
  • Daereungwon Tomb Complex - Explore Tumuli Park, home to over 20 large and small tombs from the Shilla era. These tombs are believed to belong to kings and court officials, mostly earthen and mound-shaped. Some are double gourd-shaped for the joint burial of a husband and wife. Excavations revealed stone-piled, wood-lined chambers, suggesting a similar structure for most tombs here. Artifacts like gold crowns, girdles, personal ornaments, horse fittings, and weapons were discovered in Chenmachong and Hwangnamchong.
  • Donggung Palace & Wolji Pond - Donggung and Wolji, also known as Anapji Pond, is a secondary palace of the Shilla dynasty, famous for its stunning night views. Donggung means East Palace, and Wolji means Moon Pond. It was a main palace of the United Silla Kingdom, housing many buildings including Imhaejeon Hall. The palace grounds hosted parties for kingdom celebrations and to welcome visitors.
  • Bulguksa Temple - Bulguksa Temple is Korea’s most renowned Buddhist temple, housing significant relics from the Silla period, including the stone pagodas Dabotap and Soekgatap. Originally built in the 8th century, it has undergone several reconstructions.
  • Seokguram - Seokguram Grotto, part of the Bulguksa temple complex, overlooks the East Sea from 750 meters above sea level. It features some of the world’s finest Buddhist sculptures, including the main Buddha. Constructed between 742 and 774, the grotto’s round main hall houses the Bonjon Statue, Bodhisattva, and disciples. The Bonjon figure, with a generous smile, sits on a lotus flower-engraved stage. The sunrise view from this spot attracts many early-morning climbers.
  • Cheomseongdae Observatory - Cheomseongdae, meaning “Star Gazing Tower,” was built in 634 during Queen Seonduk’s reign (27th ruler of the Shilla dynasty). It is Asia’s oldest existing observatory, featuring 27 levels of stones in a round shape with four sets of parallel bars forming a square structure on top. The 12 rectangular base stones, arranged in a square with three on each side, symbolize the four seasons and twelve months. For over two millennia, astronomers studied celestial movements here, with court astrologers reporting their findings to the King for decision-making.
  • Wolseong - Wolseong Palace Site in Gyeongju, also known as Wolseong Palace, was the royal palace of the Korean Silla monarchy during the Silla and Unified Silla periods. The palace walls’ crescent moon shape inspired its name.
