Highlights
  • Dambulla Cave Temple - Dambulla is part of Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle. The site features five caves carved from living rock, adorned with sculptures and murals, representing significant heritage. Pre-Brahmi inscriptions from the third century BC and murals from the eighteenth century highlight prolonged human activity. UNESCO designated this site a World Heritage Site in 1991. The Dambulla Project, under the Central Cultural Fund, managed mural conservation from 1982 to 1998. This Project, the sole research center for murals and the headquarters for mural conservation, also operates Sri Lanka’s only mural museum and oversees mural conservation in nearby temples. It is based at Dambulla Cave Temple.

  • Sigiriya The Ancient Rock Fortress - Sigiriya, also known as Sinhagiri, is an ancient rock fortress in the northern Matale District near Dambulla, Central Province, Sri Lanka. This historically and archaeologically significant site features a massive rock column about 180 meters (590 feet) high. According to the ancient Sri Lankan chronicle, the Cūḷavaṃsa, the area was initially a large forest, which became a hill after storms and landslides. King Kashyapa (477 – 495 AD) chose this hill for his new capital, building his palace atop the rock and adorning its sides with colorful frescoes. Midway up the rock, he constructed a gateway shaped like a giant lion, giving the site its name, Sīnhāgiri, or Lion Rock (similar to Sinhapura, the Sanskrit name for Singapore, the Lion City).
