Conditions for grape growing in Langhorne Creek are ideal thanks to the natural fertility of the floodplain soils, the ability of these soils to retain moisture from natural winter floods, and the moderation of the local climate by cooling evening breezes from nearby Lake Alexandrina and the Southern Ocean in summer. The red varieties thrive in this rich environment, which explains why over 75 per cent of all wine grapes grown are red wine grapes.

The harnessing of the natural flooding of the Bremer River by early grape growers makes the Langhorne Creek region quite unique. Having purchased 100 acres of land in 1850, Frank Potts developed a system of levees and floodgates to capture and divert a metre of water and nutrient rich silt across the entire vineyard. The vigour in growth caused by this natural abundance of water sometimes presented challenges, but it is now managed by modern viticultural practices.

  • Windsong Wines - Great wine starts in the vineyard and we love our vines.

Our first vines were planted in 2002 and we let them develop slowly for the first years before producing our first vintage in 2007.

Some vineyards have winery dogs - we have vineyard chickens which eat the earwigs and provide us with fresh eggs!

We have become part of the eco-vineyard movement to encourage beneficial insects, planting hundreds of native plants to strengthen biodiversity, reduce spraying and provide homes for birds and micro-bats.

We encourage small berries on small bunches to maximise the intense natural flavours.

Langhorne Creek is a historic agricultural area where a handful of families make some of Australia’s most generous red and white wines, graze cattle and sheep, run market gardens, create artisan bread and preserve their farm produce.
Working alongside and amongst them are the local viticulturists growing premium fruit for Australia’s largest and most prestigious wine companies.
