Suomenlinna, initially known as Sveaborg or Viapori in Finnish, has its origins traced back to 1748 when the process of fortifying the Susiluodot islands just off the coast of Helsinki was initiated by Sweden. The Swedish operated the fortress for 60 years until 1808 when Viapori was captured by Russian troops during the Russo-Swedish war.
