Highlights
  • Kera Kardiotissa Monastery - After 1 hour we are ready for the first stop on the scenic route towards central Crete is the Monastery of “Kera Kardiotissa”. It is dedicated to Virgin Mary; it is run by nuns and is locally known as Little Lourdes, with people making pilgrimages to pray for relief from their sins.
  • Lassithi Plateau - Then we drive south and reach the Plateau of Lassithi, which may have been the crater of an ancient volcano. It numbers nearly ten thousand windmills. The Plateau is a wonderfully cool and fertile area where you will see small towns and a very warm welcome. After the lunch break in one of the local villages in Lassithi, we will visit the Dicti Cave where Zeus, the father of Greek Gods, was born.

While crossing the villages of the Plateau, we pay a short visit at a traditional potter’s factory, seeing an ancient ceramic art, which completes today more than 8.000 years of history. Leaving the Plateau we will see the views down to Pediada Plain which are truly magnificent.

  • The Palace of Knossos - Last but not least after 2 hours we will visit the most famous and popular of all the attractions in Crete, the Palace of Knossos. Join your expert guide on a journey back of 5000 years into myths and legends and learn secrets of the oldest civilisation in Europe, the Minoan. Enjoy a guided tour of the historical site that covers an area of 22.000m2 on 5 floors with 1.300 rooms, hear all about the legendary labyrinth and the Minotaur (the half-human monster). A great taste of culture and history - The service was very friendly and the guide was very adept at handling multiple languages. The areas contained a nice variety of stops to buy souvenirs and all the places were filled with rich history and culture.

Great but more time needed on each stop - Generally very happy with the tour. We felt very safe going up the steep roads on the coach as the driver was very skilled. However gave 4* as we felt very rushed by the guide Maria in all the places! Particularly in Knossoss Palace, we did not have time to take in the place or read boards with additional information. Maria also spoke very quietly and was moving from language to language really quick, what was confusing at times. Zeus Cave was great, but again, the climb can be strenuous to some and people need rest and there was not much time given for this. Equally stop at pottery studio felt unnecessary and as a way of making tourists buy stuff from grumpy owners. That time could have been better spent in Knossos. Monastery visit was interesting.

Poor pre-information - Neither the Orange Rep in the shop or the booklet mentioned that Zeus’ Cave included a 20minute uphill hike (it was 34°) or 200 steps down into the cave until the guide mentioned on the coach. We are in our 60s. Obviously there is likely to be some walk and some steps to see a cave but this should have been outlined when booking. We had a drink in a café instead and if we’d known would have done the other Knossos trip.
