Highlights
  • Clava Cairns - What better place to start your Outlander tour than on the site where it all began. The standing stones of Craigh na Dun are based on the ancient Clava Cairns burial ground. This is where the main character Claire stumbled through a split stone, hurtling through time and into 1743. Be sure to get a photo with the now-famous split stone.
  • Culloden Battlefield - The Battle of Culloden was the final conflict during the Jacobite Risings. Taking place in 1746, it was a bloody and brutal battle, which features heavily in the Outlander series. Visit Culloden Battlefield where, in less than an hour, around 1,500 men lost their lives.
  • Castle Leod - Castle Leod in Strathpeffer is said to be the inspiration behind Outlander’s Castle Leoch. Author Diana Gabaldon is now patron of the castle and has supported campaigns to have the building restored. The castle is not always open to the public, your guide will check prior to arrival.
  • Garve - Loch Garve is the place where Claire spotted a Water Kelpie. Legend has it, these mythical horse-like beasts live deep in the waters of Scotland and have been spotted on occasion. So, keep your eyes peeled!
  • Beauly - Beauly and Kirkhill are neighbouring Scottish villages, about 30 minutes drive from Inverness. There are several Outlander locations to explore in this area, including Beauly Priory, Beaufort Castle and Wardlaw Mausoleum.
  • Urquhart Castle - Urquhart Castle is an ancient Scottish stronghold, now in ruins. It is one of Scotland’s largest castles, with lots to explore and discover. Claire took a day trip to the castle in the Outlander novels. A stunning location to end your Highland tour.
