The Venerable Thich Quang Duc Monument - On June 11, 1963, Thich Quang Duc traveled from the war-ravaged city of Huế to Saigon in an Austin Westminster. He exited the light blue car at a busy intersection, sat in the lotus position, and had a colleague pour gasoline over him from a five-gallon container. Surrounded by protesters, he set himself on fire. In his final note, he wrote: “I respectfully plead to President Ngo Dinh Diem to take a mind of compassion towards the people of the nation and implement religious equality to maintain the strength of the homeland eternally.” In 2010, a memorial depicting the monk engulfed in flames was erected at the very spot where he died fifty years earlier. This impressive cable-stayed bridge spans the Saigon River, which flows through the city. The bridge’s backward-sloping and curved pylon is a distinctive feature, making it a unique landmark in Ho Chi Minh City. Despite its unusual shape, the bridge’s structural design is optimal. The 200-meter main span of the asymmetric cable-stayed bridge is a lightweight composite structure of steel and concrete, while the 115-meter back span is made of concrete. This design balances the structure, eliminating bending stresses in the pylon due to permanent loads. The structure has also been optimized with the positioning of the angled cables in the back span. Unforgettable adventure! - Our Authentic Saigon Alley Street Food Tour with guides Hao and Thong was nothing short of spectacular. Both guides were incredibly friendly and demonstrated safe motorbike driving, which put us at ease right away. This tour was much more than just sampling food. Hao and Thong ensured we experienced the vibrant essence of Saigon by taking us through various hidden gems of the city that we wouldn't have found on our own. The route was very efficient, allowing us to see and taste a lot in a short time. They were always considerate of our preferences, adjusting the food selections to suit our tastes perfectly. The variety of food was impressive, and the portions were so generous that we were almost overwhelmed. Note to future travelers: consider skipping lunch before the tour! Overall, we were extremely satisfied with this tour and would highly recommend it to anyone looking to explore Saigon in an authentic and delicious way. We will definitely book this tour again on our next visit.
