Inishbofin, or the Island of the White Cow, is a natural marvel situated seven miles off the shore of Galway. Today, it stands as a beacon for visitors, local farmers, and fishermen alike. It spans 5.7km by 4km, making bicycles the most convenient means of transportation. Upon reaching the dock, you can rent a bike and start your island adventure. A year-round daily ferry service from Cleggan pier to Inishbofin is also available. The island boasts numerous cycling trails, each offering awe-inspiring views of rugged Atlantic landscapes. Its several award-winning beaches, abundant in shells and crystal clear water, serve as perfect spots for swimming, snorkelling, and diving. Recognised as a unique area for conservation and protection, Inishbofin hosts a variety of bird species, with the rarest breed currently on the island being the Corncrake. It’s believed by many that the island has a history dating back to 8000-4000 B.C.
