Highlights
  • Harder Kulm - The great journey starts not far from Interlaken Ost station and leads through a charming forest and through a wildlife park.

If Interlaken had a king, he would reside on the Harder Kulm. From the viewing platform at 1,322 metres above sea level, you will graciously look down upon Lake Brienz and Lake Thun, or admire the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau. Visit the “Two-Lakes-Bridge” and an airy viewing platform with a glass area in its floor.

Restaurant can’t be missed as looks like a small castle and is open also during evening time.

In order to visit it, however, you don’t need to be a king – just take a seat in the funicular and ascend Interlaken’s own mountain!

Great views of lakes, mountain and Interlaken - Beautiful views of the Interlaken, lake, and mountain views. You have to take a funicular train ride from Interlaken across the river from train station for a 5 minute walk. You can buy tickets online or at the spot. Although expect wait times. You also cab check for discounts for example eurail europass had a great discount. 10 minute ride up the viewpoint. It could be crowded based on the time and month of the visit. On reaching the top, the kids have a great play area, place to eat, and buy souvenirs. Then, there is an observation platform like a deck popping out and gives a great viewpoint. It's definitely worth the ride and money spent. I highly recommend this if you visit Interlaken.

Worth it! - Great views! The views are amazing of the mountains and Lakes Brienz and Thun. The funicular had panoramic views as well. Try to get there as early as possible as the line gets LONG. The funicular will also be very crowded.

Unmissable panoramic view - Magnificent view, not to be missed if you are in Interlaken. It is advisable to go early because there is usually quite a queue. The service in the restaurant is also excellent. You can go up on the funicular, or on foot along a path, it takes around 3 hours. There are many more trails to explore, so if you like hiking, this is a good option too.

Well worth it, can’t miss … but plan a lot of time for this. - The price may seem like a lot, but the views are definitely worth it. Your time at the top is not restricted. There are a variety of amenities including a restaurant. Many people elect to go to a corner and take photos. Those are busy. There are also more secluded areas with benches and play structure to enjoy your time. Trams run up and down every 15 minutes and the line can be long.

Great views - Enjoyable funicular to get there. Nice cliff to see the whole area and several Alpine peaks. Very crowded, long lines, so getting your tickets ahead of time will really help.

Great views on a clear day - This is a great spot overlooking Interlaken and Lakes Brienz and Thun. You also get wonderful views of the Jungfrau. Depending in the time of day, you might have to queue for a while to get on the funicular. Indeed, the day we went, the weather turned miserable and wet and there were long queues of people trying to get off the hill standing in the rain. They don't increase the frequency of the funicular if they're really busy. There is a reasonable restaurant at the top so on a good summer's evening, this would be a good spot to come.

Would not recommend for a starting point for the Hardergrat trail - We went to Harder Kulm on a nice June weekday. The price is CHF44 return per person so it’s not a cheap day for two adults. The price isn’t unreasonable however as the train/funicular does go up a very steep climb and takes you to quite a height. The train was really packed, there is quite a demand for this attraction. At the top is a restaurant which looks very impressive, a viewing platform and a play area for children. A lot of people seem to just hang around this area for the duration of their stay. The viewing platform does offer good views but it’s always packed like sardines. Our purpose for going to Harder Kulm was to walk on the Hardergrat trail, into the hills above Lake Brienz and get great views of the two lakes either side of Interlaken. However it was a very long walk before the views finally opened up, literally about 3 hours walking through forests before the forest gave way to green hills with views of the lakes below and mountains all around. The views were great. However it did strike us that we could have driven to behind the hills and walked up a very manageable walk to get to the same place without paying the money. So it depends what you want from Harder Kulm. If you want to just go up and get good views, have lunch and go back down then it will be ideal for you, although it will be busy. But if you want to do the Hardergrat trail and enjoy great views I wouldn’t recommend using this as your starting point.

rude cashier ticket agent… Foggy beware - The ticket agents never mentioned that it was all foggy up on top of Harder Kulm. We did not see anything as it ws all covered by fog. we asked for a refund or at least a discount for the next day but the ticket agents wont let us have a chance to enjoy the top of Harder Kulm. The cashier said “ok I am done with this!” as I begged to at least give us a discount for the next day as we traveled 8,000 miles away for this vacation. Rude short hair ticket agent and the driver of the funicular was extra rude also tossing to me the card where to complain. They should at least be considerate to let us see the top on another day. The driver said they cannot refund us because it means theyll refund every one. Bring your money elsewhere as the staff of this site are arrogant and no empathy at all. we travelers help the economy of this country but they should be nice to tourists bringing in money for them. They should anticipate such weather and let people know that they can at least enjoy this country on another day for lesser money becaise they dod t enjoy it the first time.
