Highlights
  • Corinth Canal - As we cross the Isthmus, we stop to see the great feat of engineering that finally opened the route between the Gulf of Corinth and the Saronic Gulf - the Corinth Canal. It was finished in 1893, even though the idea existed at least as far back as 602 BC!
  • The Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus - Travel to Epidaurus and see the world-renowned Epidaurus theater. Built in the 4th century BC, it is famous for its acoustics, which are so perfect that words spoken on stage can be heard perfectly wherever you are in the audience.
  • Palamidi Castle - Stepping forward in history, we will see the Palamidi Castle in Nafplio, built by the Venetians and famous for supposedly having 999 steps. According to legend, there were once 1000 steps leading to the castle, but one of them was crushed by Theodoros Kolokotronis, a leader of the Greek war of independence, during celebrations for a victory against the Ottomans.
  • Archaeological Site Mycenae - The kingdom of Mycenae was one of the first great centers of the Greek culture; settlement on this site dates back to the second millennium BC. According to Homer, Mycenae was the seat of Agamemnon, who led the Greeks against the Trojans to take back Helen, the wife of his brother Menelaus.
  • Karamitsos Winery - We also visit Nemea, an ancient wine-making region of Greece. Nemea is home to a grape variety named “Agiorgitiko” that is at least 3,000 years old. Due to the different microclimates in the region, there are a variety of different wines produced here, from fruity and light to mature and full-bodied. At the winery we discover how wine is made and try three different types of wine. It will be accompanied by a selection of delicious local “mezes”, which is a selection of local foods similar to tapas.

With an extra charge of €50/adult and €25/child you may have a full lunch or dinner. We will need a 24-hours’ notice and payment is made directly at Karamitsos Winery.

Additional Information

This exploration tour will lead us to important landmarks in the Peloponnese, ranging from ancient to contemporary, from the city of Mycenae, known from Homer’s tales, to Epidauros, the Palamidi Fortress in Nafplio and the Canal of Corinth.
Mycenae’s kingdom stood as an initial large hub of Greek civilization; the habitation of this location traces back to the second millennium BC. Homer pointed out Mycenae as the place where Agamemnon resided, the leader of the Greek faction that challenged the Trojans to recover Helen, the spouse of his sibling Menelaus. You’ll get to witness the Lion’s Gate, the arterial entrance to the royal court and the palace.
Our journey will also take us to Epidaurus where we’ll explore the globally acclaimed Epidaurus theatre. Established in the 4th century BC, it’s celebrated for its exceptional acoustics that allows clear audibility of on-stage dialogues regardless of the audience’s seating position.
Advancing further in time, we’ll visit the Palamidi Fortress in Nafplio, a construction by the Venetians and famously attributed to its 999 steps.

More than a taxi ride - Our experience with CATT taxis and in particular with Terry started with being met at the airport, whisked into a cab and driven to our hotel. On the way Terry, our driver, advised us on what to see and where to go during our stay and, more importantly, where not to go. As we were staying in a pedestrian zone he also arranged for us to be met at the drop off point. As he had been so very informative we decided to book him for a day trip to see some of the sights of the Peloponnese. During the drive we were treated to a wealth of entertaining and educational knowledge about the history, mythology and current state of the country. A private taxi tour is not, obviously cheap but if your budget allows and you have a real interest in the country it is certainly well worth the money spent. I did ask Terry if all the drivers were as well informed as he and was told that many are better so I can certainly recommend this company.
