Highlights
  • I Trulli di Alberobello - World Heritage Site - On this tour we will visit the wonderful city of Alberobello, also known as the city of trulli.

Alberobello was named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1996 because it is an exceptional example of building construction using prehistoric techniques that have survived intact and still function in the modern world.

A “Trullo” is in effect a small limestone house, made of dry stone walls, roughly worked limestone boulders collected from nearby fields and topped with a conical roof.
Souvenir shops, B&Bs, bars and restaurants will cheer up your stay in Alberobello.

  • Parrocchia Santuario Basilica S.S. Cosma E Damiano - Evocative place of worship in the beautiful town of trulli.

  • Casa D’Amore - Before the official recognition of the city in 1797 by King Ferdinand IV of Naples, it was forbidden by the local Counts to build stable buildings. They should be built only by dry stone. D’amore’s house clearly signs the passage from an “unlawful” town to a royal one. As the Latin inscription on his walls says: “First building erected by royal authority”. Francesco D’Amore, the owner of this house, was the first citizen to build his house with mortar in the town of Alberobello, after this buildings and trulli were built with the so called “malta” a mixture of lime and a red local ground called “want”. In many of the ancient buildings of Alberobello you can still see this particular cement between the stones.

  • Trullo Sovrano - The only example of a two-storey trullo is on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites and houses authentic furnishings and objects. It is located behind the Church of Saints Medici Cosma and Damiano.

It was built in the first half of the 18th century at the behest of the family of the priest Cataldo Perta, who used it as their home, while the surrounding trulli were inhabited by his employees. The large trullo was defined as “Sovereign” by the historian Notarnicola, to highlight its majesty compared to the other trulli.

The trullo, which inside boasts authentic furnishings and objects, was declared a National Monument in 1923 and has been on the list of UNESCO sites since 1996.

Built in the 18th century, the Trullo Sovrano was used as a pharmacy, monastery and country oratory. In 1785, in fact, it hosted the relics of Saints Cosmas and Damian, brought by Don Cataldo himself from Rome and, from 1823 to 1837, the Confraternity of the Blessed Sacrament held its oratory there.

  • Museo del Territorio “Casa Pezzolla” - A unique architectural complex is the home of the “Casa Pezzolla” territorial museum of Alberobello, made up of 15 communicating trulli located on the eastern side of the historic Piazza XXVII Maggio.

A visit to the museum is an ideal journey into the rich culture of the area, where you can also admire the typical furnishings of a trullo. The different sections illustrate the main productive activities of the area, from viticulture to wheat cultivation, with a rich photographic set and the reconstruction of some peasant environments.

The ethnographic museum is named after the personal doctor of the Acquaviva d’Aragona nobles, Doctor Giacomo Pezzolla, who built his residence in the second half of the eighteenth century, also using mortar for the first time in the construction of trulli. Consisting of an older part and a more modern one, the building is an expression of the transformations that affected the town in the 18th century.

  • Parrocchia Sant’Antonio di Padova - After the armistice of ‘43, many returned from the front to Alberobello and organized themselves to expand their family or move it; there was an increase in the population and development of the city.
Thus a second parish became necessary, especially in the populated and distant Monti area and for the numerous countryside districts.
Since the Church of Sant’Antonio had been built and active for over 18 years, on 1 January 1945 the Bishop of Conversano transformed it into a Parish Church and appointed its Founder Don Antonio Lippolis as Spiritual Bursar, that is, almost as Parish Priest.
