Sumo is a traditional sport that has been practiced in Japan for over 1,400 years. Do you know what kind of life wrestlers lead to nurture their strong body and spirit? In this tour, you will enter a sumo stable, which is normally inaccessible, and see morning practice sessions of sumo wrestlers, which is a sight that is usually not available to the public. Watch real sumo training up close and feel the overwhelming strength of the wrestlers! Before watching the morning practice at the Sumo stable, your guide will share some notes about the tour and cultural tips to help you enjoy the tour even more. Sumo practice is not entertainment. It is serious training, so please watch with respect and do not interrupt the practice. You will feel the depth of Sumo tradition and history through their intense and tough practice sessions! If you are lucky, you can even have your photo taken with a sumo wrestler at the end of the tour!

  • The itinerary for this tour includes some locations that are not accessible by a wheelchair or stroller.
  • There’s a possibility that the tour might be canceled due to unforeseen changes or practice cancellations by the sumo stables. Should this occur, we will promptly provide a full refund for your booking. Kindly note that this experience is restricted to individuals aged 6 years and above; those younger than 6 years cannot enter the sumo stable. Most sumo stables typically require guests to sit on the floor as they don’t provide chairs. Additionally, sumo stables retain the right to decline entry to guests who violate their rules. In such instances, refunds will not be issued. Permission to photograph sumo wrestlers or take pictures with them rests solely with the sumo stables. Be prepared for the possibility that you might not be allowed to capture photos due to decisions made by the stables. If the group size is substantial, it may be divided, with each subgroup visiting different stables. Participants might not have access to restroom facilities during the practice session, so please ensure you use the restroom before the tour commences. The duration of the sumo practice can sometimes extend beyond the estimated time, potentially causing the tour to conclude later than expected. • Summer in Japan is very hot and humid, so we recommend that you bring water and wear a hat to prevent heat stroke.
  • If we recognize that children are too noisy and interfere with sumo rikishi training, we may ask them to leave the sumo stable. In such a case, please understand that you may not be allowed to re-enter the stable.

Sumo Morning Practice - a spirited and lively, full contact sport experience - First class guide (Taka) to an inherently interesting and exciting event at the Sumo stable. A dozen highly motivated Sumos at morning practice with guidance from what appeared to be a highly respected Sumo Master. This was not lighthearted warm ups, it was full contact, spirited competition mixed with some exercises. Taka even took the time to organise us to speak with one of the up-and-coming but temporarily injured Sumo and gave us pointers and tips on some of the other activities we had planned later in the day. Excellent experience with a great guide.

Great sumo experience - We took the morning Sumo tour with Masao today. He was knowledgeable and professional. He gave us ample time at the farm to view the sumo wrestlers and then additional time to ask questions one of the individual wrestlers.

Unparalleled Sumo experience. - One of our favorite tours in Japan was undoubtedly this Sumo tour. We had the opportunity of being able to watch the sumo wrestlers during their morning practice. Our guides, Tommy and Taka, were very kind and explained the historical and cultural aspects of sumo, which enabled us to better understand the training session and the sport in general. The dedication and discipline required to become a sumo wrestler is truyl impressive, with wrestler often starting to train at the age of 15. They explained to us the strict rules that apply as a spectator, such as being absolutely silent throughout the entire practice. The practice itself was spectacular and it was very interesting to see the sport performed in person. After the session we were even able to take a pictures with the wrestlers and ask questions. Our guides were also very helpful, recommending us places to eat or to visit. We definitely recommend this tour to anyone is interested in seeing live sumo with excellent guides.

Real experience - Had a great experience watching the sumo practice. Seating was comfortable and it was nice to have a real experience rather than a touristic show off. Sho was our guide and gave us a lot of insight regarding sumo and shintoism. Also answered all of our questions.

Unique experience - Very unique experience. My boys and I enjoyed learning about this major Japanese sport. We were one of three groups. Around 20 people total. So everyone could see without issues. The athletes were very focused on their training so the small audience didn’t seem to distract them.
