Experience the timeless local tales of Meteora through an authentic morning tour. Visit historic monasteries that have stood for centuries, embrace stunning panoramic vistas, and uncover rarely discovered treasures few tourists are aware of.
- Kalambaka - Embark on a morning sightseeing tour to Meteora and immerse yourself in this marvel with the guidance of a local expert. The tour begins with a convenient pick-up (via our VIP minibus) from your hotel in Kalabaka or Kastraki.
On this guided tour, you’ll have the chance to visit all six stunning monasteries and explore the interiors of three. Additionally, you’ll uncover some of Meteora’s hidden treasures, such as the ancient Chapel of Doupiani and the impressive St. George “Mandilas” cave.
You’ll also learn about the lesser-known aspects of Meteora, including why hermits chose these towering caves a millennium ago and how monks accomplished the seemingly impossible.
Finally, take in the breathtaking panoramic views and snap some unforgettable photos.
- Kastraki - Nestled at the base of the Holy Meteora Rocks and close to Kalambaka, Kastraki (meaning small castle in Greek) is a charming village named after a small Byzantine castle, whose remnants still exist today.
- Saint Nicholas Monastery - Perched on a small rock, the Monastery of Saint Nicholas of Anapafsas appears to be suspended in mid-air and is the first monastery encountered on the route from Kastraki village to the stone forest of Holy Meteora.
- Roussanou Monastery - Also known as Arsani, the Roussanou Monastery is situated atop a strikingly vertical and steep cliff of Meteora, nestled between the Monasteries of Saint Nicholas Anapafsas and Varlaam.
- Great Meteoron Monastery - The Monastery of Great Meteoron, or Transfiguration of Christ, epitomizes the grandeur and history of Holy Meteora as the oldest and most significant monastery.
- Varlaam Monastery - The Varlaam Monastery, or Monastery of All the Saints, is set on a commanding rock directly opposite the Great Meteoron and is the second largest monastery in Meteora.
- Holy Trinity Monastery (Agia Triada) - The Monastery of the Holy Trinity is the third oldest in Meteora and the most challenging to access, requiring visitors to traverse a downhill path and then climb 145 steps carved into the rock. Legend has it that the first hermits used a rope ladder and a net to construct it, taking 70 years to transport all the necessary materials.
- Monastery of St. Stephan - Located just above the city of Kalambaka, the Monastery of Saint Stephen’s (Agios Stefanos) is the most accessible monastery in Meteora, with no steps to reach the entrance and easy access via a small stone bridge.
