  • Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic - A sacred site for Buddhists, housing the Buddha’s tooth relic in a golden pagoda
  • Royal Botanical Gardens - Renowned for its diverse collection of flowers and trees
  • Hanthana Mountain Range - Known for its tea plantations
  • Kandy Lake - Perfect for a leisurely walk around the lake
  • Lankatilaka Temple - The Lankatilaka Viharaya is considered one of the finest examples of traditional Sinhalese temple architecture from the 14th century, built by King Buwenekabahu IV during the Gampola era.

Constructed on a rock, the temple is accessed via a long series of rock-cut steps. An arched passage of the image house leads through a mandapa (hall) into the inner sanctum, which is richly adorned with beautiful floral designs. The two side walls and the ceiling are decorated with paintings, wooden doors, and vibrant frescoes featuring a seated image of the Buddha.

Lankatilaka Viharaya is primarily dedicated to honoring Lord Buddha and secondarily to holy Hindu gods, as established by Minister Senadilankara of King Buwenekabahu IV. Evidence suggests there was a monastery here before the temple was established.

  • Temple of the Gadaladeniya - Built in 1344 by King Buwenekabahu IV, the Gadaladeniya Temple features an ancient monastery on the flat rock of Diggala Pilimathalawa in Kandy.

Named Damakrithi Viharaya after its founder, the temple houses four standing images of Buddha and a statue of Lord Buddha under a Makara Thorana. The Makara Thorana is beautifully decorated with paintings of gods like Brahma, Natha, Maithree, Suyama, and Santusha, along with two attendants in the main shrine room. The temple is designed in a South Indian style.

A Vishnu Devale (shrine) is located close to the main shrine in Gadaladeniya Temple. There is also a stupa built on a rock, known as Vejayanthi Prasadaya, with a roof constructed over it. Surrounding the main stupa are small shrine rooms housing four smaller stupas, supposedly built by King Parakkramabahu V.

The chief architect of this temple was a South Indian named Ganesvarachari, and the temple’s design reflects South Indian influences. Original paintings still adorn the 638-year-old jackwood doors. The image room of Gadaladeniya Temple suffered damage from the Portuguese.

Upulvan Deiyo (God Vishnu) holds a special place among Sri Lankans as the guardian of Buddhism and the land of Sri Lanka.

  • Embekka Devalaya - The Digge (Dancing Hall) features sculpted wooden pillars and beams with traditional Sinhalese designs, including swans, double-headed eagles, women emerging from vines, Bacchanalian figures, wrestlers, dancers, and soldiers. These unique carvings showcase the skills of ancient craftsmen and the artistry of the period’s wood sculptors.
  • Hela Bojun Hala / සාම්ප්‍රදායික දේශිය ආහාර - Experience traditional Sri Lankan food processing, introduced by the Department of Agriculture to promote healthy eating.
  • Udawattekele Sanctuary - Udawattekele Sanctuary is a historic forest reserve in the hill country. During the Kandyan period, it was known as “Uda Wasala Watta.” It is recorded that a person named Senkada, after whom the city was named, lived in a cave in this forest. The cave, now known as Senkadagala Lena, is located on the slope above the Temple of the Tooth. The sanctuary is also of religious significance, housing three Buddhist meditation hermitages and three rock shelter dwellings for Buddhist monks: Senanayakaramaya, Tapovanaya, and three cave dwellings: Buddhi Lena, Maitre Lena, and Senkadagala Lena.

The sanctuary is famous for its extensive avifauna and contains a variety of plant species, especially lianas, shrubs, and small trees. Many small and medium-sized mammals, as well as several kinds of snakes and other reptiles, can be seen here. Udawattekele was declared a forest reserve in 1856 and became a sanctuary in 1938. The forest was reserved for the royal family, and the pond within was used for bathing. Public access was restricted, hence the name “Forbidden Forest.”

Udawattekele is a popular bird-watching site, home to many bird species such as mynas, blue-winged leafbirds, spotted doves, golden-fronted emerald doves, crimson-fronted barbets, and Tickell’s blue flycatchers.

  • Kandy Lake Club - Cultural Dance Show - The Kandyan Dance Show is a beautiful event held every evening in Kandy. Originally performed by dancers identified as a separate caste under the Kandyan feudal system, they were aligned with the Temple of the Tooth and played a significant role in the annual Kandy procession.

The dance’s popularity waned during the British period as support from the Kandyan kings ended. It has since been revived and adapted for the stage, becoming Sri Lanka’s primary cultural export.

  • Kandy War Cemetery - The Kandy War Cemetery is a British military cemetery in Kandy, Sri Lanka, for soldiers of the British Empire who were killed during World War II, as well as a soldier who died during World War I.

Good travel Experience - Four of us visited Sri Lanka. As a new traveler, we have little idea about places to visit except some important ones. They provide us exact tour plan and cost. Thanks to EK. We took the van with A/C. It is comfortable and well decorated. Appreciate their efforts to make our journey enjoyable and smooth.

6 Day tour across different parts of Sri Lanka with my family - I got in touch with EK from Sri Lanka Hill Country Tours around 10 days before traveling as I was in search for a good rate for a trustworthy company to provide a driver with a van for my family to travel around Sri Lanka, EK responded with a full itinerary for 6 days, the prices were reasonable and the itinerary was thorough. When we arrived both EK and Sampath the chauffeur were there to greet us, they were both welcoming, extremely polite and helpful throughout our stay. They have provided information about different locations and know their way well around Sri Lanka, they were able to provide recommendations on locations based on our interest, we have visited a number of locations some of which are Gall Fort, the Galle maritime museum, Damro Tea factory and plantations, Udawattakele forest (a unique location for those interested in hiking that won’t be listed on the internet), a turtle hatchery amongst other places. Thank you EK and Sampath we appreciate your service :)

Excellent service - We used Sri Lanka Hill Country tours to take us from Kandy to Sigiriya and then again 2 days later to take us from Sigiriya to Bentota. Our driver both times was Gayashan. He was an excellent, safe driver. His English was very good and he pointed out points of interest along the way. That is something we didn’t get from 2 previous drivers we used through a different company I would definitely used them again and highly recommend Gayashan. Thank you!!!
