Highlights
  • Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic - The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, also known as Sri Dalada Maligawa, is a Buddhist temple situated in Kandy, Sri Lanka. It resides within the royal palace complex of the former Kingdom of Kandy. This temple houses the sacred tooth relic of Buddha, which has historically played a significant role in local politics. It is believed that possession of the relic grants the authority to rule the country. In the past, Sinhalese kings safeguarded this relic. Due to its cultural and historical importance, the temple has been designated a World Heritage Site. The temple’s inner chambers host daily worship by the Bhikkhus of the Asgiri and Malwathu chapters. Rituals are performed three times a day: morning, noon, and evening. On Wednesdays, a symbolic bathing of the relic takes place using a herbal preparation of scented water and fragrant plants known as Nanumura Mangallaya. This holy water is believed to have healing properties and is distributed to all attendees.
  • Royal Botanical Gardens - The Royal Botanic Gardens, Peradeniya, are located approximately 5.5 km west of Kandy in Sri Lanka’s Central Province. In 2016, the gardens attracted over 1.2 million local visitors and more than 400,000 international tourists. Situated near the Mahaweli River, the longest river in Sri Lanka, the gardens are renowned for their extensive orchid collection. They feature over 4,000 species, including medicinal and tropical plants, and are home to the “National Herbarium of Sri Lanka.” Spanning 147 acres (0.59 km²) and situated at an elevation of 460 meters above sea level, the gardens receive rainfall on 200 days annually. They are managed by the Division of National Botanic Gardens under the Department of National Botanic Gardens.
  • Srī Mahā Bōdhi Temple - The Sri Maha Bodhi Viharaya temple, located on Bahirawakanda hill, is a well-known tourist attraction.
