Highlights
  • Chinese Fishing Nets - Chinese fishing nets, known locally as Cheena vala, are stationary lift nets found in India. These nets are fixed land installations used for fishing. While they are commonly referred to as “Chinese fishing nets” in India, their formal name is “shore operated lift nets.” These large mechanical structures hold horizontal nets that span 20 meters or more. Each installation stands at least 10 meters high and features a cantilever with an outstretched net over the sea, balanced by large stones suspended from ropes as counterweights. A team of up to six fishermen operates each net. Although these nets are used along the coasts of southern China and Indochina, in India, they are primarily found in the cities of Kochi and Kollam, where they have become a tourist attraction. This fishing method is rare in India and almost unique to this region, having been introduced by Chinese explorers in the 14th century.

  • Fort Kochi Beach - Fort Kochi Beach is located along the Arabian Sea in Fort Kochi, a part of the city of Kochi in Kerala, South India.

  • Dutch Cemetery - The Dutch Cemetery in Fort Kochi is a notable site, famous for its historical significance. It was consecrated in 1724 and is now managed by the Church of South India. The cemetery holds the graves of Dutch settlers who left their homeland centuries ago to expand their empire, and it contains many interesting stories.

  • Church of Saint Francis - St. Francis Church, located in Fort Kochi, Kochi, is one of the oldest European churches in India, originally built in 1503. It holds historical importance as a witness to the European colonial struggle in the subcontinent. The Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama died in Kochi in 1524 during his third visit to India, and his body was initially buried in this church before being moved to Lisbon fourteen years later.

  • Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica - The Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica in Fort Kochi is one of the eight Basilicas in Kerala. Recognized as a heritage edifice, it is one of the most impressive churches in India and attracts tourists year-round.

  • Indo-Portuguese Museum - The Indo-Portuguese Museum in Fort Kochi, Kerala, was established through the efforts of the late Dr. Joseph Kureethra, Bishop of Kochi, to preserve and showcase the rich cultural heritage and Portuguese influence in the area. The museum highlights the Portuguese impact on Fort Kochi and the surrounding regions, particularly the western parts of Kochi.

  • Maritime Museum Kochi - The Maritime Museum, located within the premises of INS Dronacharya, the Navy’s gunnery and missile school in Fort Kochi, explores India’s naval history with displays of warship models, artillery, and uniforms. The museum itself is housed in two fortified ammunition bunkers built before World War II, adding to its historical intrigue.

  • Mattancherry Palace - The Mattancherry Palace, also known as the Dutch Palace, is a Portuguese palace in Mattancherry, Kochi, Kerala. It features Kerala murals depicting portraits and exhibits of the Rajas of Kochi and is included in the “tentative list” of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

  • Paradesi Synagogue - The Paradesi Synagogue, located in Kochi, Kerala, is the oldest active synagogue in the Commonwealth of Nations. Built in 1568, it is one of seven synagogues of the Malabar Yehudan or Cochin Jewish community in the Kingdom of Cochin.

  • Cochin Spice Market - A straightforward shop with polished displays offering a variety of exotic spices sold in bulk.

  • Jain Temple - The Jain Temple in Mattancherry, dedicated to Shri Dharmanath, the 15th Jain Tirthankar, is a prominent place of worship known for its daily pigeon show and feeding at noon. Built in 1960, the temple complex features various blocks for prayers and offerings, inspired by the architecture of Jain temples in Gujarat.

  • Bastion Bunglow - Bastion Bunglow is a sea-facing Dutch heritage structure built in 1667, showcasing Indo-European architecture with a strong Dutch influence. It served as a residential building during the British period, and Colonel Macaulay, the resident of Cochin in the early 19th century, once lived there.

Tuktuk experience in Fort Kochi with Shanu - Shanu was a kind and thoughtful driver. He took us exactly where we asked to go, as we had already done the basic tour. He explained everything to us, he took us into the laundry, he explained local festivals at the Hindu temple and he dropped us at that David Hall Art Cafe - where we had asked to go. We had a lovely afternoon with Shanu. Thank you

Complete tours and friendly staff. - Very kind and knowledgeable staff about the history and curiosities of the city and its monuments. They are not pushy about purchases even though they accompany you to the shops. It's a normal thing and if you want to contribute, I consider it the right thing to do. The drivers are friendly and serious about their work. The cost is fair.
