Chinese Fishing Nets - Chinese fishing nets (Cheena vala) are a type of stationary lift net found in India. These nets are fixed land installations used for fishing. While commonly referred to as Chinese fishing nets in India, their formal name is shore-operated lift nets. Large mechanical structures hold horizontal nets that span 20 meters or more. Each structure stands at least 10 meters high and includes a cantilever with an outstretched net suspended over the sea, balanced by large stones hanging from ropes as counterweights, operated by a team of up to six fishermen. Although these nets are used along the coasts of southern China and Indochina, in India, they are primarily found in the cities of Kochi and Kollam, where they have become tourist attractions. This fishing method is rare in India and almost unique to this region, introduced by Chinese explorers in the 14th century. One interpretation of the city name Kochi is ‘co-chin,’ meaning ‘like China.’
