While commonly known as Chinese fishing nets in India, the more formal name for such nets is shore operated lift nets. Huge mechanical contrivances hold out horizontal nets of 20m or more across. Each structure is at least 10m high and comprises a cantilever with an outstretched net suspended over the sea and large stones suspended from ropes as counterweights at the other end which is operated by a team of up to six fishermen. While such nets are used throughout coastal southern China and Indochina, in India they are mostly found in the Indian cities of Kochi and Kollam, where they have become a tourist attraction. This way of fishing is unusual in India and almost unique to the area, as it was introduced by Chinese explorers who landed there in the 14th century. Indeed, one interpretation of city name Kochi is

Safe, fun, convenient, hospitable &friendly way to see Cochin and see local culture - Great trip to see Cochin when we were only in town for a day from the cruise excursion. Friendly organized and prompt confirmation of booking and waiting for us to get off ship as we went thru India Immigration process. Safe tuk tuk tour brought to local sights as well as helped to organize a trip to professional massage center during the tour. They went past the tour time that was posted due to places we wanted to see and we compensated them for their extra time. On the way back to ship we also stopped for shawarma sandwiches and wanted to bought the guide a sandwich, yet the credit card machine was not working right with our American cards, and the tour guide spotted us the cash (we paid him back). I would take again and recommend to other ans solo travelers. I felt safe with the guide and even tho I was traveling with someone if I was solo I would not hesitate to book with them.

The real Kochi with a funny local - Riya was an excellent driver and guide. He was funny, accommodating, and honest. He had a list of places to see, but we really wanted to do some specific activities including buying sarees for an upcoming wedding. He patiently waited for us and then, when we were completed, he took us to other sites before returning to pick up the altered clothes. We loved the laundry visit, driving the local streets, and learning about Kochi. Riya provided great info and lent us rupees since we only had USD. We would do the tour again with Riya and the ‘Ferrari’ tuk tuk!

Amazing half day tour in Cochin - We had an amazing tuk-tuk tour with Shaheer. To start with, he was flexible in his scheduling when we were held up in customs and immigration. He was very friendly and knowledgeable and took us to see the highlights of Cochin. We particularly enjoyed watching fishermen operate the huge Chinese fishing nets. Shaheer also happily accommodated our requests to take us to (a) eat seafood, (b) eat local fruit, and (c) eat street peanuts (there’s a theme here, we know). We only had half a day in Cochin, and we checked off all we wanted to do. Thank you Shaheer!

First port in India and first tuk-tuk ride - A great way to see and get a feel of Cochin from a tuk-tuk. Our driver and guide was Shina who waited over 2 hours for us to clear immigration. He was happy to take us wherever we requested. As it was our first visit to India It was reassuring to know we had a booking and didn't have to start looking for a ride at the port. Thank you Shina for showing us your beautiful town and country.
