Highlights
  • Chinese Fishing Nets - Chinese fishing nets (Cheena vala) are a type of stationary lift net found in India. These nets are fixed land installations used for fishing. While commonly referred to as “Chinese fishing nets” in India, the formal term for these nets is shore-operated lift nets. Large mechanical structures hold horizontal nets that span 20 meters or more. Each structure stands at least 10 meters high and includes a cantilever with an outstretched net over the sea and large stones suspended from ropes as counterweights. Each installation is operated by a team of up to six fishermen. Although these nets are used throughout coastal southern China and Indochina, in India, they are primarily found in the cities of Kochi and Kollam, where they have become a tourist attraction. This fishing method is unusual in India and almost unique to the area, having been introduced by Chinese explorers in the 14th century.

  • Fort Kochi Beach - Fort Kochi Beach is a beach along the Arabian Sea located in Fort Kochi, a part of the city of Kochi in Kerala, South India.

  • Dutch Cemetery - The Dutch Cemetery is a notable site in Fort Kochi, known for its historical significance. It was consecrated in 1724 and is now managed by the Church of South India. The cemetery contains interesting stories about its imperial inhabitants who left their homelands centuries ago to expand their empire.

  • Church of Saint Francis - St. Francis Church, located in Fort Kochi (Fort Cochin), Kochi, was originally built in 1503. It is one of the oldest European churches in India and holds historical importance as a witness to the European colonial struggle in the subcontinent. The Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama died in Kochi in 1524 during his third visit to India. His body was initially buried in this church, but after fourteen years, his remains were moved to Lisbon.

  • Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica - The Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica in Fort Kochi is one of the eight Basilicas in Kerala. Recognized as a heritage edifice, this church is one of the most impressive in India and attracts tourists year-round.

  • Indo-Portuguese Museum - The Indo-Portuguese Museum is located in Fort Kochi, Kerala, India.

  • Dhoby Khana Public Laundry - The Dhoby Khana Public Laundry in Kochi, India, was established in the early 1700s as a central community location for cleaning laundry. Clothes are washed manually by hand, a traditional method that has remained unchanged for centuries. The facility includes a building for ironing, another with concrete wash basins and slabs for slapping fabric, and a field of clotheslines. Each worker sets up their own clothesline made of braided coir fiber. The establishment began during Dutch rule to wash military uniforms, and the workers’ ancestors are from Tamil Nadu. The community is friendly and welcomes visitors to try using their hot iron press.

  • Mattancherry Palace - The Mattancherry Palace, also known as the Dutch Palace, is a Portuguese palace in Mattancherry, Kochi, Kerala. It features Kerala murals depicting portraits and exhibits of the Rajas of Kochi. The palace is on the “tentative list” of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

  • Paradesi Synagogue - The Paradesi Synagogue, located in Kochi, Kerala, South India, is the oldest active synagogue in the Commonwealth of Nations. Built in 1568, it is one of seven synagogues of the Malabar Yehudan or Yehudan Mappila people, also known as the Cochin Jewish community.

  • Cochin Spice Market - A straightforward shop with polished displays offering a variety of exotic spices sold in bulk.

  • Jain Temple - A prominent Jain place of worship known for its daily pigeon show and feeding at noon.

  • Cochin Thirumala Devaswom Temple - Cochin Tirumala Devaswom, also known as Gosripuram, is the largest and most significant socio-religious institution for the Gowda Saraswat Brahmins of Kerala, India. Excellent Driver in Kochi - Aslum was a my Tuk-Tuk driver in Kochi. I found him through excellent reviews from other tourists online. Aslum is an experienced, safe, punctual, confident and very kind driver. As a solo female traveler, I was very well taken care of and I felt safe with him. all my requests were fulfilled with pleasure. Aslum can really guide you where to go and what to do based on your guidelines. The only thing that bothered me a little bit was that his Tuk-Tuk was fully covered and I could not see the views well when sitting inside

Absolute Best Way to Experience Kochi!! - This was easily the highlight of our trip! Our driver, Hani, was so knowledgeable and generous with his time. The tour was supposed to last 2 hours but instead went on for 6 (we took a long time at each of the museums he took us to) without any complaint. He was so friendly and recommended food and massages, which we thoroughly enjoyed. He was so friendly, anytime we would bump into him while walking on our trip, he would take us to our destination! Just an absolutely phenomenal experience thanks to Hani and the next time we come back to Kochi the first thing we will be doing is contacting him :)

A ride by an insider - It was a fascinating experience to ride tuk-tuk in the old part of Kochi and get to see the known and unknown sides of the city. Firos is an experienced driver and an engaging guide who can show you around and tell a lot about the city and give you hands-on advice on what to get where. I would surely do it again!

Tuc tuc drivers saved my stay! - At arrival Fort Kochi seemed difficult to get an overview of. I tried to explore the neighbourhood by foot but was immediately discouraged by the long, barbed wall enclosing a military area, preventing access to what I imagined might be a beautiful beach. But as soon as I stumbled over Hussain and his tuc tuc everything changed. He offered an initiated ride through town which opened my eyes and ears to its fascinating history and colorful presence. I was introduced to every attraction mentioned in my guide book and some more. Having spent half a day in his well informed company I felt confident enough to explore pearls of the town on my own. And each time I felt the least little bit lost there was a friendly tuc tuc driver around who could save me 🙂
