Highlights
  • Kampong Phluk Floating Village - At Kampong Phluk we hop in a boat and explore, taking in the beautiful waterways and charming houses on stilts. In the dry season, you’ll be able to see the watermarks on the beams showing how high the waters rise, and in the wet season, you’ll see the villagers and fishermen going about their business by boat.
  • Tonle Sap Lake - Going out on the Tonle Sap itself is a deeply calming experience thanks to the still waters meeting the horizon as far as you can see. We round off the day with a drink (and dinner, if you wish) at a traditional floating restaurant to watch the sunset over the lake.

During dry season the lake is brown but the boat ride was an experience - We did this with a private tour guide. There are so many boats there you didn’t need to make a reservation. Just show up and find a boat to take you out. The boats have a long propeller that sits just under the water so they can navigate shallow waters. If you get stuck they use an oar to push you back into deeper waters or even jump out of the boat and push. You pass many stilt houses along the way to the open lake. It was fun watching daily life going on as we passed. Once you get to the lake you go fast out to one of the floating restaurants. That was a bit underwhelming. Our tour description said that we would see an actual floating village but our guide said this was not possible anymore. So back on he boat to retrace your steps. We liked it as it was a u inquest experience
