Highlights
  • Brickfields - Stroll through the Little India shopping district where you’ll encounter an Indian eatery, jewelry stores, and shops selling traditional Indian attire. We’ll also sample some Indian biscuits.
  • Vivekananda Ashram - The first point of interest is the Vivekananda Ashram, established in 1904. This striking, white building adorned with Mughal architectural features is dedicated to the memory of the Indian spiritual leader Vivekananda, who visited Malaya in 1893.
  • Little India Brickfields - This neighborhood is alive with the typical sights, sounds, and aromas found in Little India areas across Malaysia. Expect to see beauty salons specializing in wedding preparations, stores overflowing with incense, cookware, and other Indian imports, vendors of saris, jewelry, prayer altars, Bollywood films, snacks like Bombay Mix, and sweets, Tamil internet cafes, eateries serving curry, sugar cane juice vendors, and more.

Adjacent to flower shops offering jasmine garlands and other vibrant flowers, we reach the vividly decorated Little India District, which was revamped and officially reopened by the Prime Ministers of India and Malaysia on October 27, 2010.

  • Church Of Our Lady Of Fatima - Our journey continues past the Catholic Church of Our Lady of Fatima, located further down Jalan Sultan Abdul Samad
  • Brickfields - As we move along Jalan Berhala, or Shrine Street, our heritage walk in Brickfields takes us past additional places of worship
  • Buddhist Maha Vihara - Established by the Sinhalese community in 1894, this temple appears to have a predominantly Chinese following. Within the temple grounds stands a Bodhi tree, cultivated from a cutting of the sacred Bodhi tree in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka.

Directly across from the temple is a beautifully maintained traditional Malay wooden house. This pre-World War II residence once matched the entire street’s architecture. It was the home of a Malaysian magnate’s parents, who has since restored it for private use.

  • Klang River - The Klang River meanders through Kuala Lumpur and Selangor before emptying into the Straits of Malacca.

Tamil Methodist Church:
The nearby Tamil Methodist Church, founded in 1896 (though the current structure was built in the 1960s), serves a similar purpose, offering services in Nepali, Indonesian, Telugu, and English, in addition to Tamil

  • Evangelical Lutheran Church - Dating back to 1924, this church was likely established to minister to the local Tamil population.
  • Madrasathul Gouthiyyah Surau Brickfields - Rejoining Jalan Sultan Abdul Samad, the walk brings us by the Madrasathul Gouthiyyah Surau, a mosque and religious school established in the 1980s primarily for Indian Muslims

Brickfields Shivan Temple :
The Brickfields Shivan Temple is among the most frequented temples in the nation.

  • Sam Kow Tong Temple - This Chinese temple in Brickfields was founded in 1916 by the Heng Hua community. Its name means “Hall of Three Teachings.”

Malaysian Association For The Blind (MAB):
Opposite the temple is the Malaysian Association For The Blind complex. Many of its members are likely employed in the numerous Blind Massage Centres located on Jalan Thambypillai.

  • Brickfields - YMCA of Kuala Lumpur Hostel :
The Little India Walk heads back towards KL Sentral, traversing Jalan Padang Belia (home to the YMCA) before turning onto Jalan Thambypillai.

The walk features a plethora of Indian dining options, as one might expect from a Little India Walking Tour.

The total distance of the recommended route is between 3 to 4 kilometers, and we spend roughly 3 hours here, including time for a snack break.
