Highlights

6:30pm You’ve done the daytime temples, gardens, and academic thing, had a bit of rest, and are now ready to set about seeing what the night has to offer. We’ll meet at Gion Shijo Station, then start with an educational walk through the justifiably famous Gion district, which is located on the east side of the Kamogawa River. Learn about the geiko (and why we don’t call them “geisha” in Kyoto), as well as the places that make this district so special. You’ll also regaled with insight and info about how the art of evening entertainment has evolved into the hostess clubs of today. (Rest assured this tour is suitable for teenagers and higher.)

7:30pm Your hour-long anthropological adventure has left you ready for some food and drink, and we know just the place. You’ll get to try a few different regionally representative dishes and a beer – or perhaps you’d like a shochu or some sake instead? Various dietary restrictions, tastes, and bravery levels will be happily accommodated.

8:15pm Take a stroll through both youthful and classic restaurant and entertainment districts on the west side of the Kamogawa River, including Pontocho, Kiyamachi, and the Kawaramachi St. area. The old narrow streets along Pontocho will allow you to see how much the people of Kyoto value and protect tradition, while the younger areas a couple streets away will show you how eager Kyoto people are to also firmly live in the present.

9pm No night is complete with just one restaurant stop, so we’ll visit another thoroughly vetted and often enjoyed spot. There will be more tasty vittles for your culinary consideration, and of course another drink in accompaniment.

9:30pm The end of the evening has come, but hopefully you’ve been able to garner a lasting understanding and appreciation of Kyoto’s various foods, nightlife, and vibe.

Would recommend. Nice way to see Gion at night - Hugo is a fun and knowledgable guide. We ate at some delicious, very small restaurants. And the evening walk around Gion was beautiful.

Gion at night - Deedee lead our group of 6 thru the back streets of Gion explaining the architecture, customs and culture of the Gion district. We stopped at 2 different tiny bars for excellent food and beverages. Deedee was knowledgeable and answered all our questions. This tour gave us ideas of where we wanted to return to later in our visit to Kyoto. I would recommend this tour especially because of new restrictions of tourists in some of the Gion streets (to protect the geishas).

Decent Introduction to Kyoto - Joshua took us to a number of bars where we sampled the local drinks and cuisine. The Wagyu beef and some of the local dishes were fantastic as were some of the local draft beers. Overall an enjoyable evening.

Unless you get a Japanese guide, I would avoid this tour. - We were disappointed to find that our tour guide was an American who had not lived in Japan very long and said they preferred Osaka, where they live. We booked the experience expecting to have a Japanese guide who could tell us about their own culture from a native perspective. We also found the two restaurants we were taken completely forgettable and have eaten in better places just walking around ourselves. We did not enjoy this at all and felt it was a waste of money. If we could have opted out in the first ten minutes and asked for a refund, we would have. The guide tried their best- but I didn’t come to Kyoto to have an American tell me what they think of Japan- and especially not to tell me how they don’t really think Kyoto is worth more than a couple of days.

Let down by tour guide - Love everything about Kyoto but was let down by the tour guide. They were on their phone too much, rushed us through everything and could not answer questions as they were not from Kyoto.
