  • Pachacamac - It was built in adobe with view to the sea and the Lurin river valley. It was a pilgrimage site for many cultures that developed in ancient Peru. Upon arrival of the Incas, the complex was adapted to become an administrative center, respecting and adapting the local constructions. You can find there the Temple of the Sun, the Acllahuasi, the Palace of Taurichumbi, and the Pilgrimage Plaza, among others. We will also visit the Site Museum to get a better insight and appreciate the salvaged remnants of the area.

The massive Temples of the Sun and the Moon are known to be the compound’s most striking features. Built entirely of clay, an estimated 50 million sun-dried bricks were used in the construction of the Temple of the Sun alone. Excavations in the area continue to reveal further insights into the Moche and Huari cultures that spanned the period from 200 to 800 AD.

History and culture - I was enchanted by Inka history and culture, a rich and very well presented collection. The most important thing was to be accompanied by the guide Eduardo, an encyclopedia.

History, Lore, Ancient Architecture, and Stunning Views: This Tour Has it All! - We were picked up in front of our AirBnB in Barranco, which was super convenient. The vehicle was a mini-bus with AC and comfy seats, although we were the only 2 guests on the trip so we felt very exclusive with the whole bus to ourselves! Our driver, Adulberto, did a great job of navigating Lima’s wacky traffic. Our guide, Mayrol, was absolutely fantastic! Great communication via WhatsApp prior to the tour, and super friendly and fun during the tour. Pachacamac is about a 30-40min drive outside of Lima, so we had a great time of both discussing the area’s history and then chatting like we were old friends catching up. Once at the site, we first stopped at a small museum that’s a recent addition to the site. Inside there’s a scale model that shows just how huge the area is. We also observed some of the various artifacts that have been found. Because the site is so big, we were driven deeper in and then dropped off at different points. There’s still a good deal of walking, so wear comfy shoes! Also, it’s the desert, so hats and sunscreen are a must. Throughout, Mayrol regaled us with the rich history of the site while also including some of the more interesting religious practices and lore. At the end, we were driven back into the city and dropped off at our AirBnB. We HIGHLY recommend this tour. It is a half day well spent!

Good but could be better - The Oracle of Pachacámac is a truly impressive archaeological site and a must-see! Overall, this tour was good but could have a few improvements. Positives were that you got picked up and dropped off at your hotel in a small car which is quick and efficient for navigating the busy streets of Lima. Our guide seemed to have some knowledge of the ruins but we had read/heard some information that was contradicting. However, that is normal with any tours as so much information regarding ancient history is open to interpretation and personal beliefs! We were also driven to each of the three temples which can be a pro and con I supposed. There are some interesting sights/building that you will drive by. It would be nice to take a moment to appreciate these smaller buildings but it is not doable with the time slot. That leads into my cons. The tour felt pretty rushed overall. Despite the Oracle of Pachacámac being the main draw for this tour (we had actually booked this tour thinking it was the only sight we would see), you make two stops before arriving at the final destination. Both my partner and I could have done without these stops. The fish market was somewhat interesting but I would not have opted to go there if it was up to myself. We also stopped at. Lookout point, I forgot the significance of the spot but it was nothing overly special. We would rather have spent that extra time at Pachacámac. We were basically rushed through the museum/intro with no time to read the signs or look at artifacts. We got a very brief breakdown of highlights but I would have like to have looked around. We also were walked through the temples at a fairly quick pace, little opportunity to stop for pictures and take it all in. Overall, this tour is just okay. If we were to do it again, we would probably just hire a taxi driver by the hour and go through the site at our own pace. It appeared that the site offers guided tours so I would look at investing in one of those instead!
