Highlights
  • Guildhall - This hour long walking tour in Derry will also retrace parts of the original march and visit places where the dead and wounded fell. The Bogside History Tour will examine the political and social repercussions of Bloody Sunday. The tour will pass ‘The Museum of Free Derry’ and conclude at the Bloody Sunday monument within sight of Free Derry corner and beneath the city walls of Derry.

The Bogside (Irish: Taobh an Bhogaigh) is a neighbourhood outside the city walls.. The large gable-wall murals by the Bogside Artists, Free Derry Corner and the Gasyard Féile (an annual music and arts festival held in a former gasyard) are popular tourist attractions. The area has been a focus point for many of the events of the Troubles; in 1969, a fierce three-day battle known as the Battle of the Bogside became a starting point of the Troubles.

An inspiring and generous journey through Derry - Our tour guide Macrea was incredibly knowledgeable, welcoming, and passionate. He walked with us through notable sites, accompanied by his engaging retelling of events mixed in with his personal experiences of growing up in Derry during the Troubles. Macrea went out of his way to recommend places for us to visit and where to go for the best night life - it was a joy sharing a drink with him to round off our time in the wonderful and hopeful city of Derry.

Don’t be surprised if you are moved to tears - Such a powerful experience. Paeder was an eloquent, enthusiastic guide who was well able to balance conveying the horror the Irish people endured at the hands of the British with jokes and craic to lighten the mood. He shared personal stories of Bloody Sunday along with some detailed history of the city of Derry. Your tour ticket (honestly a steal at only £10) also includes discounted admission to the Free Derry Museum. Highly recommend doing the tour first, then heading inside the Museum, which is also first rate. Altogether a very emotional experience. Set aside time for a pint when you’re done…

Good tour but watch the price - I paid for the tour online and it cost £12 per person. If I had just pitched up at the The Giuldhall, Paul was doing the tours for £10 per person. So somebody ripped me off, NOT the giude. The guide was excellent, he explained lots of the history of the troubles as they affected Derry. He answered many questions and in fact exceeded the tour time much to everyones' pleasure. Very much recomment the tour but just turn up at the Guildhall and see the guide in person.

Don't miss this tour if you are visiting Derry! - This was a gem of a tour around Derry with the smart and witty, Paul Doherty at the wheel. Paul was a wealth of knowledge about all things Irish history. His keen knowledge of historical facts and his first-hand knowledge of living through the Troubles as a son of one of the 13 killed during Bloody Sunday came together for a fantastic tour. Highly recommend!

In-depth inside tour of the Bogside with fantastic guide - Very in-depth walking tour with a fantastic guide. Neal is a local, born in the Bogside and raised ö during the troubles, so I got first-hand insight into the history as well as the current situation. Learning about the different events by someone who has lived through it makes it more real for us visitors. I can only highly recommend this tour if you are interested in the history and stories of the Bogside residents and their struggles!
