Highlights
  • Abydos - Pickup from your hotel in either Luxor by tour guide to start your tour. Abydos (hieroglyphic: “Ab-b-djo”) is a city in western Balina, Sohag, and was one of the ancient cities in Upper Egypt. Most archaeologists agree that it was the first capital of Egypt at the end of the pre-dynastic era and during the first four dynasties, dating back 5,000 years. It is located between Assiut and Luxor near Qena. It was a holy city called Tennis by the Greeks. Currently, it is called Al-Araba Al-Madfuna (Al-Balina), and it is about 11 kilometers from the Nile. It includes the Temple of Seti the First and the Temple of Ramses II, which are distinguished by bas-relief ancient Egyptian inscriptions. This city was the main center of the worship of the god Osiris.
  • Dendera Temple Complex - The Dendera Temple complex (Ancient Egyptian: Iunet or Tantere; the 19th-century English spelling in most sources, including Belzoni, was Tentyra; also spelled Denderah) is located about 2.5 kilometers (1.6 mi) southeast of Dendera, Egypt. It is one of the best-preserved temple complexes in Egypt. The area was used as the sixth nome of Upper Egypt, south of Abydos. The whole complex covers some 40,000 square meters and is surrounded by a hefty mudbrick enclosed wall. Dendera was inhabited in prehistory, a useful oasis on the banks of the Nile. It seems that Pharaoh Pepi I (ca. 2250 BC) built on this site, and evidence exists of a temple in the Eighteenth Dynasty (ca. 1500 BC). The earliest extant building in the compound today is the mammisi raised by Nectanebo II – last of the native pharaohs (360–343 BC). After you are done with your tour, you will be taken back to your hotel.

Perfect getaway from luxor - We really enjoyed our trip to dendera and abydos. It’s the perfect getaway from luxor. Both temples were beautiful and way less busy than the temples in luxor, but as least as impressive. Our guide, ghada, was very knowledgeable and passionate about ancient egypt. It’s quite a long drive, but you get a glimpse of egyptian country life, which is an experience within itself.
