- De Bisschopsmolen - The Bishop’s Mill (Bisschopsmolen) in Maastricht is one of the oldest working water mills in the Netherlands, dating back to the 7th century. Today, the Bishop’s Mill is still operational, producing flour using traditional methods. It is believed to have originated from the gate’s function as a defense point, possibly evoking fear or respect among attackers, and its association with the harsh conditions faced by prisoners held there.
