Plaza Mayor - The name of the plaza has changed over time. It has been known as “Plaza del Arrabal”, “Plaza de la Constitución”, “Plaza Real”, “Plaza de la República” and now “Plaza Mayor”. These names reflect events, history and reign in Spanish history.
“Plaza del Arrabal” was the original name of the present day “Plaza Mayor”. The “Plaza del Arrabal” was once the site of the most popular marketplace until the end of 15th century. Following the Constitution of 1812, all major plazas in Spain were renamed “Plaza de la Constitución”. It also held this name 1820 to 1823, 1833 to 1835, 1840 to 1843, and 1876 to 1922. When the Borbón king was restored in 1814, it became known as the “Plaza Real”. In 1873, the name changed to “Plaza de la República”. At the end of the Spanish Civil War the plaza received its present name of “Plaza Mayor”.

Wonderful Experience - The palace was amazing and our guide was very knowledgeable about the history. We also enjoyed the walking tour of the surroundings and learning about some of Madrid's most notable landmarks.

Great tour! - Great experience seeing the palace! Having the guide for the town square and market, skipping the line and the tips throughout the palace was worth it! She was very knowledgeable and pointed things out we would have never known on our own!!

Great Tour - We were so fortunate to be able to go inside the palace and see the tour (the palace was closing the following day for 10 days). Our guide was extremely knowledgeable and provided a ton of facts about each room! Highly recommend this tour!

Experience - Although it is a nice place to visit, there are many people crowding before the opening, and during the visit, with long lines exposed to the hot ambient temperature. The truth is that in the end, between the wait and the price of the ticket, I am not satisfied, the time I wasted can be used by visiting other places.

Meh - It was hard to understand the tour guide. The outside of the Palace was beautiful but the interior tour was underwhelming. The ability to skip the long lines makes taking a tour worth it, but otherwise you can do it on your own.

Good tour but not as promoted - Tour was fine & guide good but...
1. Advertised as small group with no more than 11 or people. Started with 30 people then split into 2 groups, ours with 16 people.
2. Tour start time was 3.15pm but we had to wait half an hour standing on a busy street in a queue before the tour started.
