Highlights
  • Prado National Museum - Start at the Prado, Spain’s response to the Louvre. One of the most visited sites in the world, the Prado is essential for any trip to Madrid. Housed in an 18th century neoclassical building, the Prado Museum displays thousands of works from its vast collection, spanning the 1200s to the 1900s. Some of the stand-out pieces include “Las Meninas” (The Maids of Honor), an inventive self-portrait by Spanish-born Velázquez, and “The Garden of Earthly Delights,” a triptych from Dutch painter Hieronymus Bosch. You’ll wander its hall as your expert guided reveals the stories and secrets behind works by Goya, Fra Angelico, El Greco, Rembrandt, and others. Explore the largest collection of Italian masterpieces outside of Italy in addition to a fine selection of prints and sculptures.

  • Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia - After a break for lunch, make your way to the Reina Sofia Museum, which houses an exquisite collection of Spanish modern and contemporary art. Part of a former hospital, the Reina Sofia became gallery space for 20th century art back in the 1990s. On this tour, your guide will introduce you to the different artistic movements showcased here, including abstractionism, cubism, surrealism, and modernism. You’ll come face to face with works by the iconic Pablo Picasso, including his world-changing painting, “Guernica.” You’ll browse works by Joan Miró, like “The Man with a Pipe,” and Salvador Dali’s “Face of the Great Masturbator,” learning about the techniques and strategies they used to create their oftentimes quirky works of art. You’ll discover all about the social and political movements that shaped these artists and their work, including the Spanish Civil War. You’ll leave with a richer understanding of 20th century Spain, allowing you to wander confidently through one of the world’s largest contemporary art collections.

A Fantastic Way to Experience the Masterpieces - Andrea brought these works of art to life for us! We thoroughly enjoyed our time with her and benefited greatly from her wealth of knowledge and insight. We felt fortunate to have a private tour for the Prado and only 2 additional guests for the Reina Sofia, which allowed us to engage her directly with questions and other points of discussion. I am so glad we found this tour and had the opportunity to experience these masterpieces with Andrea!

Profesor Knows!!! - It was an excellent experience. Our guide, Ángel, was professional, knowledgeable, fun and engaging. He is an art professor so his knowledge level was of very high caliber. We are traveling with our two teenage daughters and the way he explained the art painting and pieces was very appealing and fun!!! Museo del Prado is a most!!! We are glad we took this tour as it is a very large museum and Ángel took us to the main paintings the ones that you can’t missed!!! We also went to Reina Sofia museum, he mentioned that there are some areas of the museum that are being remodeled so not all paintings were being presented; we decided to take the tour anyways and It! Was worth it!!! We some work of Picasso, Miro and Dali!! Just being able to see The Guernica by Picasso was an experience by itself. I highly recommend Babylon Tours!!! If you really like art ask for Angel!!!

Great indepth tour of both museums - Both the Prado and the Reina Sofia are treasures, but what makes them even more special, is how close and intimate they feel, especially in a private tour setting. Ana, our guide, was amazing and gave us an incredible amount of information not just about the artworks but also their context in the history of Spain. She helped us understand the artists and their life story, and was great at pointing out details we easily would have missed otherwise. Thoroughly enjoyable and highly recommended.
