Highlights
  • Medina of Marrakesh - Marrakech is a city located in central Morocco, inland, at the foot of the Atlas Mountains. It is nicknamed the “red city” or the “ocher city” in reference to the red color of a large part of its buildings and houses. The city was founded in 1071 by Youssef ben Tachfine, at the head of the Berber Empire of the Almoravids. In the past, Morocco was known in the East as Marrakech (still relevant in Iran); the name Morocco comes from the deformation of the Portuguese pronunciation of Marrakech: Marrocos. Marrakech has 928,850 inhabitants according to the 2014 census, spread over an area of 230 km2. The population density reaches 350 inhabitants per hectare in the Medina.

Its fame speaks for itself - Well its fame speaks for itself, the hub of Marrakech, all life develops here, perfumes, smells, colors and the ability of traders to sell are mixed... Medina

A good but long day out!! - This was a full day TUI tour from agadir . Our pickup was at 7.00 am but fortunately although it was a large coach our group was only 20 people. Journey was nearly 4 hours with a 15 minute stop after the 1st 90 minutes. Our guide Ahmed was brilliant all day. He was super knowledgeable and made sure that everyone got involved in the tour. Lunch and dinner were at good restaurants with the option of vegetarian meals and in my case with my allergies a different lunch and dinner menu altogether!!.Dinner was with a show of belly dancing g which was fun to see, with people taking part.We had a full day of exploring the medina which is something not to be missed, with the opportunity to shop at a local store . At one point he gave us all info allowing us to contact him via the local police in case we got lost , which was brilliant!! During on visit I suffered a diabetic issue and even th it was during Ramadan they couldn't have been more helpful rushing off to get sugar and sweet coffee.a lady also suffered from a migraine and he got a local pharmacy to open to help!! Be aware that the temperature was extreme in and around the medina, with temperatures over 38 degrees centigrade. Recommend this trip to all.

Nice to watch - The Medina of Marrakesh is absolutely worth seeing. Lots of small, narrow streets. Countless shops with fake items, spices and things to eat. A must-see!

Day trip to Marrakesh - Went from Agadir to Marrakesh and did the walking tour of the old Medina. It was really good to have a tour guide as the Medina is a labyrinth in itself. Also good to get tips as to what to watch out for and what is safe. We got a very good and informative quick history lesson from our wonderful tour guide, Akram. He also guided us to a rooftop restaurant that served traditional Moroccan tagine that was really tasty. On our free time we wanted to visit the Bahia palace but it was unfortunately closed due to some filming that day. But instead had fun in the buzzing market square, bargaining, snake taming and people watching. All in all we had a very fun time and learned a lot about the Moroccan people.

A few days in the medina - Very exotic and fascinating, a truly unusual place. But be careful of people with a friendly and jovial appearance who offer to show you the Tanners district (pretending, as if by chance, that they work there, and that they will take you there). This is a visit that may cost you dearly 🫤. A very well-crafted scam. Only follow guides who have a map otherwise you risk regretting it and leaving with a bad image of this magnificent place.

Authentic and exotic - We walked around the medina for a long time with our two children. The most: it’s really exotic. It's touristy, but also authentic, you know how to walk there without being caught all the time by the merchants. The negative point is the scooters through the medina, and possibly the pollution and the smells, but that's part of the folklore. You simply have to be careful not to let yourself be taken away by so-called guides who are not really guides.

Conclusion after 1 week in Marrakech - We decided to spend a week in Marrakesh. Initially very excited and optimistic, later rather sobering. Personal conclusion after 1 week in Marrakesh (Medina): We had a really beautiful riad with very friendly and courteous staff. Top. The area in the middle of the medina and the souks is rather loud, hectic and chaotic. For me, not or hardly comparable to other large and busy cities. There are traders lined up one after the other, all ultimately selling the same thing. Clothes, porcelain, souvenirs, bags. Whatever your heart desires. While walking through the souks, you feel like every trader is talking to you. If you don't stop, they call out to you. If you do stop to look at an item, you are not alone for a second. The sales talk starts straight away or various things are shown and demonstrated. Encouraged to buy. The Djemaa el Fna, the famous large market, is also full of people, tourists and traders. It is impressive and exhausting at the same time. You see snake charmers, acrobats and musicians. It's crazy. But you should still be careful here, because despite the many nice people, people are trying to do business with tourists on every corner. Understandable on the one hand, but intrusive on the other. Day trips are highly recommended to get away from the trouble for a while. We discovered great mountain villages and explored the rural side with my very polite guide. The gardens that surround the medina and the mosques also have absolute added value and are worth seeing. After a week in Marrakech, I'm afraid I have to say that I didn't like it as much as I expected. But I still recommend traveling to Marrakech. I think everyone should experience or see this city/culture and everything around it at least once. However, I would limit the travel time to 4 days. Last but not least: I haven't said a word about this fantastic food! Fabulous. There is incredibly delicious food on every corner and there is something for everyone. Whether in a nice restaurant or at the street food stand around the corner. You really can't go wrong. Clear recommendation.

Mixed experience in the Marrakech medina: Dangerous scooters and air pollution spoil the historic charm - The Medina of Marrakech offers an authentic experience with its boutiques and talented artisans. However, my visit was spoiled by the noise and danger of scooters crowding the narrow streets. This makes it difficult to walk around safely and fully enjoy this historic place. It's a shame that this nuisance is so present, because otherwise the medina would be a pleasant place to explore.

The 2 wheels have ruined the medina - But what madness!!! 🤮 We can no longer move around, we can no longer breathe, two wheels are killing the medina of Marrakech. Thousands of low-end, ultra-polluting scooters invade the winding streets of the city to the point where they can no longer travel 2 meters without being jostled and suffocated. As long as the public authorities do nothing against this scourge, which endangers tourism as well as the health of residents and tourists, you can forget about strolling the streets of the ocher city.
