Matala Beach - The renowned Matala Beach is one of Crete’s top tourist spots, situated near Phaestus, the second largest palace of the Minoan Civilization.

For many, Matala is synonymous with one thing: hippies. In the late 1960s and 1970s, this small town became a haven for the “flower children” who resided in caves that were once Roman tombs.

Here, we can relish the clear waters, bask in the warm sun, and enjoy a seaside lunch. Later, there’s an option to explore the prehistoric caves (entrance fee 4€), which are carved into the area’s steep rocks.
