Highlights

Meet your small group at a prearranged spot in Queen Victoria Market. The historic landmark, whose nicknames include “Vic Market” and “Queen Vic,” was established over two city blocks in 1878.

Five days a week, vendors set up shop in the laneways. Organic produce bursts from crates labeled by region, and stands overflow with honey, spices, and other local goods. Pates, cheeses, and dips fill Deli Hall, also known as the Dairy Produce Hall. Around every corner, there’s a sight to see, and your guide will point out details easy to miss in the bustling market throughout the 2-hour tour.

While most of the market is filled with tables and stands, you can also find specialty shops. Gourmet breads are sold over at the bustling M&G Caiafa, nuts, dried fruits and grains abound. For a sweet treat, head to the American Doughnut Kitchen, where you can indulge in famous hot jam doughnut. For handmade pasta of all shapes and sizes, step into the Traditional Pasta Shop.

At the end of your guided tour, enjoy a fruit platter!

Sample tasting menu, subject to change:

  • Coffin Bay oysters
  • Hot jam doughnuts
  • Grilled peppered kangaroo
  • Pickled octopus
  • Local goats’ milk cheese
  • Fresh dolmades
  • Victorian olives

Please note: Tastings are seasonal and dependent on what’s new and currently popular at the market.

Highly recommend - Very informative and enjoyable 2 hours spent this morning with Carmel. Learnt so much about the history of the market and met some of the 4 generations that were there. The food we ate was all delicious and some of the produce I’d never seen or heard of before. A wonderful day out. Thankyou Carmel for your time, knowledge and humour.

Awesome tour helps break down the Market - The Ultimate Foodie Tour was better than I expected. Our guide, Irene, had an incredible passion for the spot - it was wonderful to hear how she had grown up with the Market. The place is huge, and so going on the tour was helpful in breaking it down, as well as discovering bites from places I surely would not have stopped by without some guided help. Definitely recommend for solo travelers, couples, family, and friends alike!

Amazing food, you will leave satisfied and entertained - Irene our guide was fantastic, knowledgeable and friendly. We learned so much about the history of the market and the individual sellers whose stalls we visited. There was so much food on the tour, no need for a snack before the tour. We tried fresh oysters, lovely cooked and cured meats and cheeses, pasta, olives, capsicums, fresh bread, doughnuts, and incredible refreshing hot Chai on a cool day. Absolutely fantastic tour and I wished I'd been able to extend my stay in Melbourne so we could've spent more time at the market.

Market stocks a wide variety of fruit and vegetables - The Victoria Market is diverse, it has everything from seafood and meat to a wide selection of fruit and vegetables, We bought beef and pork mince so we could make bolognaise, and mature tomatoes to go with the meat when it was cooked. It's worthwhile going to the Vic Market, we also bought firm bananas and ripe kiwifruit, which was very sweet. There's a wide range of just about everything you need to make your life worthwhile, at a bargain cost.

Great for families and those who love delicious, fresh food. - Our guide, Carmel, was so knowledgeable and was able to engage our children (11) by involving them throughout the tour. We loved learning about the history of the markets and we got so much more out of our experience than what we would have if we had gone independently. My favourite food was the Greek platter, my husbands was the cheese and meats and the kids was the donuts and fruit. Thank you to Benny for making my daughter’s day by cutting up a watermelon for her to try. Highly recommend for families or those that love delicious, fresh food.

Flavours of Greece Tour - This tour was excellent and a great way to learn about the history and operation of the market, plus of course learning about the "Flavours of Greece" available in the market. Stallholders who shared samples of their produce were very varied and generous together with being entertaining. The Tour Guide, Irene ; a Greek/Australia woman resplendent in Greek national colours was entertaining and informative and conducted a very relaxed tour which made for a great way to spend time to learn about one of Melbourne's must see locations.

Foodie tour - The foodie tour was great. Lots of history about the market and plenty of foodie tastings. I’d suggest having a light breakfast cause you will be so full after the tour, you won’t need lunch and maybe dinner! Our guide was lovely and very knowledgeable about the market.
