Additional Information

There lies a stunning spectacle in the warm, shadowy depths of the lagoon where waters shimmer vibrant blue, teeming with life. The water around your fingers, the sweep of your kayak’s paddle, and the surge rippling off your vessel all sparkle amidst the blackness. Fish darting about leave luminous trails, dolphins resemble fiery torpedoes, and a manatee can be likened to a tranquil, elegant submarine. Multiple visitors liken the spectacle to the world of Pandora from “Avatar,” or remember the radiant plankton scene from “Life of Pi” as the softly glowing organisms can be held and let slip through your fingers. While a few may facetiously attribute this to NASA discharge, the truth is more fascinating - it’s a bioluminescent reaction from tiny algae known as dinoflagellates. These microscopic beings, safe and entirely natural, illuminate before your eyes in such vast quantities that millions can exist in a single liter of water. Your journey will encompass an extensive education about these rare and extraordinary organisms, guided by the region’s most enlightened professionals.

The best part of our vacation! A must when vacationing on the space coast in Florida! - My girlfriend and I recently went on the bioluminescence kayak tour at Merritt Island, and it was an incredible adventure! Our tour guides, Piper and Island, were fantastic and made the experience even more memorable. We opted for the clear tandem kayak, which was a great choice as it allowed us to see the bioluminescence in stunning detail throughout our ride. The guides were very knowledgeable and went above and beyond our expectations, providing interesting information about the phenomenon and the local ecosystem. One of the highlights for us was using the provided fishing nets to catch comb jellies. It was a unique and thrilling experience to see these glowing creatures up close. The tour lasted about 1.5 hours, which was the perfect amount of time to fully enjoy the bioluminescence and explore the area. We highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting the Space Coast. It’s a fun and natural activity that offers a truly magical experience.

Fun and memorable bioluminescents tour - Fourteen or so adventurers assembled late Friday night at Kelly Park East. The weather was warm and windy, and the moon was bright. Piper and Kurt, our guides, gave us a short briefing, then we walked to the shore and mounted our kayaks. Most of us had tandems. Our guides were fantastic. They led us to great sites, and helped us get incredible views of the bioluminescents. The two hours flew by, but we have awesome memories of “comb jellies” and fish lighting up the water as the raced by. Piper and Kurt were very attentive and made sure everyone was safe. We had several checkpoints where we rested and Piper shared information and tips. When we returned to shore, we were a little tired and very soaked but we loved every minute. It was an awesome experience! I have a better appreciation of our Florida coast. Many thanks to Piper and Kurt for this great experience!

An unforgettable adventure! - We had an amazing time on our trip! It was the last day we were in Florida and wanted to get one final adventure in. Weather did not seem to be on our side, but Piper (our tour guide) went above and beyond and refused to let us leave disappointed. We waited out the storm for over an hour and we were able to do the full tour despite it being quite late. Piper was truly awesome and very friendly. She was informative and knowledgeable on the bioluminescence. Piper really focused on providing us the best experience which we had. It was a great end for our Florida trip and would highly recommend a Day Away Kayak Tours for those visiting the area. Highly recommend Piper for your tour guide. Very grateful for the experience we had!!
