Your first stop is the village of Mauromati, where you’ll learn about the legend behind its name—a myth dating back to ancient Greek mythology and connected to the upbringing of Zeus. The first structures you’ll encounter are the city’s fortification wall and the sole surviving entrance gate, standing firm since 369 BCE. Stand before the Arcadian Gate to marvel at its grandeur and let the stones transport you back in time, imagining what it was like to be a Messenian warrior defending your family. Stroll along the same paths once trodden by Epaminondas, the renowned general who established the city on the ruins of Ancient Ithomi, a consequence of Spartan conquests. This great leader chose to end the wars and promote “democracy.” Just above the ancient city, a coffee shop awaits to host you for about an hour before you enter the main site. There, you’ll learn about the city’s foundation, its history, and its ever-changing conquerors. Explore the ancient city at your own pace within the allotted time. Finally, visit the small Archaeological Museum later on.

Fantastic Tour - Thoroughly Recommended - Aristoteleia tailor-made our day's trip for the group of 8 people, starting with an early pickup (& drop off) from Stoupa.
She was able to organise at short notice a tour of the ancient city of Messene with an archaeologist as our very knowledgeable guide.
This was then followed by a trip to the near-by olive mill at Androusa Messinas "The Olive Routes". This included a tour of the mill, olive oil tasting, food matching and a light lunch; followed by a trip to the town's castle and its spectacular views.
Very well organised.
Aristoteleia is a very knowledgeable and amiable host.
