Highlights
  • Pompeii Archaeological Park - At the time of the dramatic eruption, Pompeii counted about 11.000 inhabitants, while Herculaneum had a population of some 5.000 people. A number of emperors and aristocrats had their holiday villas in these cities. One day, in 79 AD, several meters of ashes buried the whole area in a matter of few hours. Centuries later, in 1748, under the Bourbons government, excavation works started. The discovery was greeted with enthusiasm as it added great wealth to the kingdom and inspired the neoclassicism movement in Europe. Nowadays, the ruins of Pompeii are amongst the most visited archaeological sites in the world, while Herculaneum is renewed for its Villa dei Papiri containing a library of over 1800 papyruses. Visit of the excavations (approx 2 hrs) and if time permits also of a coral and cameos factory to admire the production procedure carried on by expert artisans

Additional Information

This excursion primarily focuses on the exploration of the region’s two significant archaeological sites: Pompeii and Herculaneum - the ancient Roman cities that were obliterated by the Mt. Vesuvius eruption in 79 AD. Being acknowledged as essential parts of the Roman Empire, these cities were at their zenith, both socially and economically, during the catastrophe. Pompeii, a vibrant city acting as a hub for traders and voyagers, contrasted with Herculaneum, which was more of a residential town for nobles and scholars. There will be a lunch break at a local eatery, excluding beverages. In the latter part of the day, we will be venturing towards the remnants of Herculaneum.

  • If there are fewer than six people in your group, the tour will operate with an audio guide instead of a real local guide.
  • Not suitable for passengers with walking difficulties

Lots of old ruins - Easy pick up right by our Cruise ship. It was great to go to both places to be able to compare. Our guides for each tour were very knowledgeable . Guissepie stuck to a very manageable schedule and took us to a great lunch!

Great tour - The tour guides for both sites were awesome. There was so much to see in both places. Our cruise stop was short and they made sure we made it back to the ship on time.

Pompeii and Herculaneum - Our guide in Herculaneum, Connie, took the time to thoroughly explain the different histories of that community and Pompeii. Her love for history and the desire to teach us was evident. Both tours were well organized and saved us a lot of time and trouble vs trying to navigate ourselves.

Good tour. Well organized. - Very well organized. Good way to see the ruins. More time at each location would have been nice but we were quite knackered at the end (hot, minimal shade, lots of walking). Having a guide in the Herculaneum would have been better than the audio guide, as it was quite repetitive and we weren’t sure if there was more to see. Lunch was ok. Nice break from the sun. Would recommend again.

Great team- much more to see than the time allowed - Good team of guides, really knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. Lunch was disappointing- we would have preferred to have some free time to look for food ourselves, and both tours could have done with being at least 30 minutes longer… so much to see and we were hurried along.

Language choice not guaranteed - The guide on the bus was very nice. He didn't speak much French but still made an effort. We chose this company because it offered tours in French. However, the Pompeii tour was conducted in Spanish and English. We were provided with audio guides in French, but it is difficult to follow a group that way. It would have been easier to do the tour on our own, but we had paid for a guided tour. One of us followed the guide and the other just listened to the audio. The lunch meal was average, several people left almost full plates. And the visit to Herculaneum was done with an audio guide for everyone, as planned. In short, if you can follow in English, it's a good option since the support makes everything easier. Otherwise, think about it

Disappointed - Directions to meet up point in my booking were wrong. We were at a spot bus did not come. No time to get to a different spot as all taxis were on strike. Bus would not come get us as they had already filled our spots. Very disappointing. Hoping for a refund.
