Pompeii Archaeological Park - The remnants of Pompeii were uncovered in the late 16th century by architect Domenico Fontana. The discovery of Herculaneum occurred in 1709, and its systematic excavation commenced in 1738. Pompeii’s excavation started in 1748, and by 1763, the finding of an inscription (“Rei publicae Pompeianorum”) confirmed the site’s identity as Pompeii. These mid-18th century excavations at these locations heralded the beginning of modern archeology.

Sorrento - Known in Roman times as Surrentum, Sorrento is steeped in legends that suggest a strong link to Lipara, possibly as a colony. Throughout the Imperial era, Surrentum retained a predominantly Greek character.
The earliest ruins in Sorrento are Oscan, tracing back to around 600 BC. Before the Roman Republic took control, Surrentum was under the influence of Nuceria, sharing its history until the Social War. It appears to have participated in the 90 BC revolt like Stabiae and was subdued the following year, which is likely when it received a colony.
