Highlights
  • Drakolimni - We start our ascent at the village of Mikro Papigo, following a well-carved path to the mountain refuge of Astraka. Throughout the climb, we have excellent views of the Towers of Papigo and Mount Nemertsika (in Albania), among others. Then we descend to the dry (in summer months) Xerolimni lake, which was formed by glaciers millions of years ago. After that, a steep hike to the lake, rewarding us with the satisfaction of climbing it, the Balkan chamois (goat-antelope) population wondering what we do at their habitat and wonderful views of the Aoos canyon and Mount Smolikas (the second-highest in Greece).

A splendid mountainous lake that presents spectacular sights of towering summits around it and the trail that leads to it. It is among the most untouched and awe-inspiring locations in all of Greece. The Lake is situated at an elevation of 2,050 m on Tymfi Mountain, within the protected vicinity of the North Pindus Range NW of Gamila peak (2,497 m.) - Tymfi’s loftiest summit. The surrounding terrain is bare but striking in its unusual beauty, providing a wide-ranging view of the mountain peaks.
