Highlights

Arrival in Puerto Maldonado (Capital of Biodiversity of Peru)

Tambopata National Reserve - Reception at the airport or bus terminal and transfer to the Monte Amazónico Lodge office for registration. Transfer to the captaincy port where we will take a one-hour boat ride to our lodge. Upon arrival, enjoy a welcome meeting with a refreshing fruit juice from the region and settle into your rooms.

After a restful break, embark on a two-hour introductory walk through the dense tropical forest, guided by an expert local guide. Explore trails and marvel at trees that are over five hundred years old. You may also spot various wildlife species such as toucans, orioles, macaws, monkeys, snakes, and butterflies. Experience the magic of the Amazon rainforest within the TAMBOPATA NATIONAL RESERVE, which spans 278,000 hectares of protected land.

After lunch, visit “Monkey Island,” located across the Madre de Dios River from our lodge. Here, you will encounter different species, including families of Capuchin monkeys. Return to the lodge afterward.

In the evening, we will search for white alligators typically found on sandbars in the Madre de Dios River. A flashlight will be necessary for this activity. Additionally, you may see capybaras, the world’s largest rodents, which can weigh up to 60 kilos. Return to the lodge for dinner and rest.

Sandoval Lake

Lago Sandoval - After breakfast, we will walk 3 km through the dense rainforest to reach Sandoval Lake, a habitat for piranhas and one of the largest lakes in the Tambopata National Reserve. We will take a rowing boat to observe a variety of birds and monkeys, including shansho, cormorants, jacanas, puma herons, chickens, cotomonos, monk friars, black machins, pichicos, and sloths. We may also encounter a family of giant otters, which can grow up to two meters long and are endangered, as well as the largest recorded alligators, over 4 meters long. Return to the lodge for a typical lunch.

In the evening, we will take a walk to appreciate the diversity of insects, amphibians, reptiles, and other nocturnal animals. Enjoy dinner and rest.

Adventure Sports

Tambopata - At 5:30 a.m., we will take a short walk along the Canopy Walk-Way, about 30 meters high, offering a panoramic view of the Madre de Dios River and the surrounding nature. From the platforms, observe various bird species such as toucans, macaws, tangaras, and orioles. It will be a wonderful experience.

After breakfast, prepare for a tree-top challenge activity over 30 meters high. An instructor guide will provide a safety harness and instructions for the Zip-line, allowing you to glide through the trees and feel the adrenaline. Return to the lodge for lunch and rest.

In the afternoon, the challenge is to cross the Madre de Dios River by kayak, where you can enjoy the fascinating sunset.

We saw capuchin and squirrel monkeys, (heard howlers) , black and white caiman, Macaws, capybaras, heron, piranhas, tarantulas, giant grasshoppers, frogs, turtles, tons of birds, a tree boa constrictor, I caught a catfish in the river—- this was worth every penny - great staff!

All around a very nice jungle experience - We had a very nice experience. The food was great and often three courses. Our guide Ronal was very friendly and explained a lot to us about the jungle and life in Peru. We can definitely recommend the lodge. Be sure to bring good mosquito spray. The tours in the jungle were also very interesting and doable for everyone.

Budget tour with great food & guide - Lots of interesting animals. Food was great and guides were too. Accommodation was very basic and had seen better days. More activities are needed for colder days as there is nothing to do when not on a tour. We left a day early as it was so cold! In warmer weather it would be different but be aware that it’s cold showers and no fan/aircon. The windows are mesh and huts made from plywood so super basic but clean.

A unique experience - A unique experience indeed. We saw a tone of amazing wildlife and it was so incredibe to be up close to this nature. The meals provided were good quality. Our tour guide Tito was fantastic also. He was 73 and born in the area. He knew so much and able to answer all of our questions. So the downsides... Be warned that the heat is inescapable. There are no fans or coolers. The only way to cool down was the pool which was warm being in the heat and then the pool turned my blonde hair green!!! We had a lot of downtime and wished we had actually booked the two night option instead. The fishing was at the wrong time of day to actually catch anything. the ziplines are fun, but don't take up much time. I would recommend this tour to anyone who is really enthusiastic about nature and Wildlife. Just make sure you come prepared for the heat and bring a book for all of the downtime you will have.
