The Carnival of Montevideo is a deep-seated tradition engrained in the culture of Uruguay, which has been in existence for many years. Running from the latter part of January until early March, multiple groups, divided into five categories - Murgas, Comedians, Parodists, Magazines and Comparsas de negros y lubolos, traverse the city, performing on platforms, also referred to as ‘tablados’. They concurrently take part in the Official Carnival Groups Contest.
Ever since the outset of the previous century, these platforms have served as an integral congregation point for the carnival celebrations. They are a representation of the people’s festivities, the city’s tradition and its legacy. This is where acclaimed artists have established a connection with the carnival’s artistic expressions, such as the murguero song and the candombe.
In the evenings, you can enjoy between two to four shows on a platform that immerse you in the unique carnival culture of Montevideo, which is a major attraction for many tourists visiting the city for this festive display of artistry.
