Highlights
  • Fortaleza del Cerro - Now it’s time for a short coastal drive towards the highest point of the city, at roughly 300ft. Here we’ll appreciate 360 degree breathtaking views of Montevideo and see the 210 years old colonial fortress from outside.
  • Ciudad Vieja - Here you’ll discover the Old City by foot, where it all started. We’ll see unique 200+ years old buildings and visit the most beautiful squares of the city, such as Zabala, Constitution and Independence Square with its huge monument and majestic Solis theatre and Salvo Palace surrounding it, where we’ll also pass under the old Gateway of the Citadel.

We’ll also see the Metropolitan Cathedral, National Bank building and many other attractions that are located within the district such as the Cabildo (old city council) and find some remnants of the wall from when Montevideo was fortified.

  • Parque del Prado - Not too far from Cerro, we’ll visit this beautiful and old green residential neighbourhood, where upper class families used to live during last century. As a proof of that, there are still some of the manor houses. Then we will see some interesting sculptures at Prado park, the greenest area of the city.
If you’re interested in art, we can also pay a visit to Blanes museum, home to the most impressive paintings of the greatest Uruguayan artists.
  • Palacio Legislativo - Now it’s time to see the Parliament House, a massive neoclassical building made of marble dating from almost 100 years old. You’ll be impressed by its huge columns. This is where Uruguayan laws are made.
  • Mercado del Puerto - Now it’s time for a tasty lunch. You’ll have many options to choose from, such as a typical Uruguayan “asado” (bbq) at Mercado del Puerto, a 150 years old market. If you want to have another thing, you’ll also have plenty of options, including pasta, empanadas, or if want, you can try our unofficial national dish, called Chivito.

Lunch is at your own cost. Stopping for lunch is optional, we can skip it if you prefer.

  • Rambla de Montevideo - We’ll take advantage of the longest coastal walk in the world, driving all along its length and stopping at a few points for short walks and panoramic views.

The High Reviews are Deserved! - We travelled by ferry from Buenos Aires to Montevideo for an overnight in the city, and because time was limited, we searched out a well-reviewed private tour. Our guide Javier contacted us within hours of our booking to provide pickup information, and then met us at the ferry dock on arrival. Our tour started with a drive along the twisting shoreline road as far as the upscale residential Carrasco neighbourhood, with Javier explaining the city’s strong connection to Rio de la Plata. Returning to the city centre we explored the exterior of the Palacio Legislativo on foot before he drove to the lovely Mercado Agricola, which had lain vacant for many years before its refurbishment in 2013. Javier stopped briefly to show us the colourful Villa Muñoz barrio, then found parking on the edge of Ciudad Vieja for about an hour of downtown walking. As he pointed out Montevideo's buildings, plazas, statuary, and shops, we learned much about Montevideo’s history, challenges, successes, and likely future. After about five hours of touring he deposited us at our hotel. All told, we very much enjoyed our time with Javier. We found him to be knowledgeable, capable, cheerful, and attuned to what we wanted to see. Tour with him and you will understand why he has earned his high reviews.

Highly recommended private tour - We enjoyed a great day touring. Javier communicated with us and set up a time and place to meet. He gave us some options and off we went. He is extremely pleasant and knowledgeable. We are sure that we covered more than any tour available to us on the ship. We enjoyed a great day stopping at many spots where he gave us all the history. Wonderful day in Montevideo - Our cruise arrived late, but Javier waited for us. He drove us all around Montevideo with many stops along the way. He told us the history of the city and what Montevideo is like today. He gave us a walking tour of the old, historical section of the city and then escorted us back to the dock. He was sensitive to our individual needs. He is easy to spend time with and an excellent tour guide.
