Highlights

Day 1: M’hamid Village

Marrakech - The first day of the 4-day desert trek consists of a morning departure from Marrakech, Agadir or Ouarzazate, with transport by private vehicle, to reach the village of Mhamid, located at the edge of the desert. A break is possible in a village in the Atlas, with a visit to Ait Ben Haddou which is near Ouarzazate. Ait Ben Haddou is a Ksar classified as a UNESCO heritage site. In the evening, it is planned to spend the night either with locals in the village, or in a comfortable fixed bivouac, in the heart of the palm grove.

M’Hamid

M’Hamid - The second day begins with a departure on foot from the fixed bivouac, accompanied by the Morocco Desert Trek team and the camel caravan. We then begin a hike in the Sahara desert towards the M’hamid Palmeraie, where we have tea and lunch in the shade of a tamarisk tree. After a break to rest, we continue our way towards the sanctuary of Sidi Naji. Oral tradition reports that this marabout lived 18 grandfathers ago! This place is filled with fascinating local stories and customs. In the evening, we set up camp at the foot of the sand dunes and spent the night in the desert under tents or under the stars.

Day 3: Erg Zahar

M’Hamid - The bivouac folds to the rhythm of the sun, we begin our departure through the dunes, then a vast dry lake to reach the superb dunes of Erg Zahar, also known as the “howling dunes”. We spend the night in the Sahara desert in tents or under the stars.

Day 4: Marrakech

Marrakech - At the end of the evening, we return to M’hamid before heading to Marrakech, Agadir or Ouarzazate.

The next morning, we find our 4X4 to take us to our fixed bivouac, crossing the magnificent landscapes of the Drâa Valley. After lunch at the bivouac, we return to Marrakech, Agadir or Ouarzazate

Trek with the nomads - Many thanks to the exceptional team - Khalil, Abdel, Abdul, Barhim and Ismail - who made this experience even more incredible. The raid in Marrakech was absolutely magnificent and foreshadowed the stages to come in this adventure. Abdel's culinary expertise was surpassed only by his warmth, genuine spirit and hospitality. The journey to M'Hamid was an ever-evolving story as Aba shared his knowledge and love of his country with me, transcending language barriers. Upon arrival in M'Hamid, Khalil became my guide in the Sahara the next day. Abdul's knowledge of the desert's secrets and hidden gems was absolutely fascinating, and his navigation of this ever-changing wilderness was impeccable. Upon arrival at desert base camp, Brahim's welcoming and conscientious character was evident throughout the stay. A musical gathering (led by Abdul) around a campfire reflected the teamwork of a dedicated team, while the Milky Way twinkled above. The next day, accompanying Ismail as he led my camel to the base of the highest dune, was well worth the effort of the climb on foot to see the sunset. Morocco and its people are vibrant and prosperous. The effects of the earthquake, just before my arrival, appeared visually minimal (although I know lives were lost and my heart goes out to those who lost loved ones and homes).

Trek Desert Morocco is the best - We booked a four-day private trip from Marrakech to Zahar Dune with Trek Désert Maroc. Coordination and booking were handled individually via WhatsApp. The booking process is fairly casual, requiring a small advance payment via Paypal, but I highly recommend putting your trust in Khalil; it's definitely worth it. Khalil's excellent command of English was a great help to us, which is not always guaranteed in Morocco. Undeniably, the trip was the highlight of our Moroccan vacation. Our day and night in the desert left an indelible mark on us. We crossed peacefully by camel and quickly by 4x4 through the savannah and desert, encountering a brief sandstorm, savoring the sunset atop the magnificent Zahar Dune with an endless panorama of dunes before us. We tried sandboarding, experienced an enchanting desert camp decorated with fire, candles and music. Our days were punctuated with exceptional meals, and Mohammed and his two friends showered us with hospitality. Khalil turned out to be an extraordinary person in our eyes. His birth in the desert lends an authentic charm to his representation of nomadic culture. It operates in a socially responsible and sustainable way, collaborating with friends, family and local businesses. We would not hesitate to book with Khalil again, but we would plan to allow more time for the experience next time.
