  • Giant Pohutukawa Tree - This ancient tree, estimated to be around 600 years old, is the last remaining pre-European Pōhutukawa on the Mt Maunganui ‘sand bar’ and holds significance for the local Ngäi Te Rangi Iwi. Early settlers reportedly found several pre-European skeletons in a kneeling ceremonial position at the tree’s base. Māori leader Kihi Ngatai (Ngai Te Rangi) noted that during Cyclone Bola, several branches broke off, but local Māori would not allow the council to cut the tree, as the deceased were once hung from its branches until they decomposed, with their bones then buried underneath.

Spur of the moment. - We stepped off the ship, not knowing what to do or see that day. At the end of the pier we saw a sign, for a V8 motorcycle ride. We knew immediately what we were going to do. We’ve always wanted to have a ride. Both of us were 78, game for anything. We had the 90 tour. We were not disappointed. Great tour people, we had the owners son take us. He was a pilot in the NZ airforce, home on leave. Would we do it again, YES, in a heartbeat.

V8 was Gr8 mate - We thoroughly enjoyed our trip on the bike. I've been really wanting to do one of these trips for many years and finally got to do it. Great way to see the local town and the price was very reasonable.

Best way to sight see - Best 2 hour excursion we have been on. Nigel’s commentary was really good and the scenery was great. He obviously loves showing Tauranga to visitors and pointing out spots to visit if we had time later. Shame the time seemed to go too fast. Was impressed with contact the night before our booking offering a couple of other options if the weather was still bad but fortunately weather turned out great.
