Highlights
  • Jvari Church - Jvari Monastery stands on the rocky mountaintop at the confluence of the Mtkvari and Aragvi rivers, overlooking the town of Mtskheta, which was formerly the capital of the Kingdom of Iberia.

According to traditional accounts, on this location in the early 4th century Saint Nino, a female evangelist credited with converting King Mirian III of Iberia to Christianity erected a large wooden cross on the site of a pagan temple. The cross was reportedly able to work miracles and therefore drew pilgrims from all over the Caucasus. A small church was erected over the remnants of the wooden cross in c.545 named the “Small Church of Jvari”

  • Svetitskhoveli Cathedral - The Svetitskhoveli Cathedral is an Orthodox Christian cathedral located in the historic town of Mtskheta, Georgia, to the northwest of the Georgian capital Tbilisi. A masterpiece of the Early and High Middle Ages, Svetitskhoveli is recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
  • Stalin Museum - The Joseph Stalin Museum is a museum in Gori, Georgia dedicated to the life of Joseph Stalin, the leader of the Soviet Union, who was born in Gori. The Museum retains its Soviet-era characteristics.
  • Uplistsiche Cave Town - Located in Eastern Georgia, Uplistsikhe (literally “Lord’s Fortress“) is an abandoned rock-hewn town, which once has played an important role in Georgian history. The place was founded in the late Bronze Age, around 1000 BC, and continued to be inhabited until 13th century AD. Between the 6th century BC and the 11th century AD, Uplistsikhe was one of the most important political and religious centers of pre-Christian Kartli – one of the predecessors of the Georgian state.

Additional Information

Mtskheta, located in the Mtskheta-Mtianeti province of Georgia, is one of the country’s oldest cities. It sits at the junction of the Kura and Aragvi rivers, roughly 20 kilometers north of the capital, Tbilisi. In this historic city, you’ll find the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, an example of Eastern Orthodox architecture.

Renowned for its Early Middle Ages design, the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Svetitskhoveli is Georgia’s second-largest church, following the Holy Trinity Cathedral. Another significant site in Eastern Georgia is Uplistsikhe, or the “Lord’s Fortress“. This deserted town carved out of rock has been a significant piece of Georgian history. Established during the late Bronze Age, around 1000 BC, it remained populated until the 13th century AD.

The best tour guide in Georgia - I booked Popular Destinations through recommendation from a friend and the tour guide, David did not fail us. He was on time on our pickup arrival from airport, suggested where is the best rate for money exchange and transferred us to our place of stay. We did a 4 day tour, personalised according to our schedule. 1st day we did a night tour of the old Tbilisi City, 2nd day, Kakheti tour, 3rd day the Kazbegi and Gudauri Tour and 4th day Mschketa half day tour. He provided us with a minivan for us as we are a family of 4. It is very comfortable and he even provided a carseat for our child. All tour we had was pleasant and David is very knowledgeable of the country’s history. He speaks fluent in English. He suggested the places where we tried authentic Georgian Cuisines. Overall, it was a very great, comfortable and very organised vacation and will definitely come back with the same tour guide company.
