Highlights
  • Karlstor - During this evening city tour, you come out of the darkness of the past: actors in historical costumes bring Munich’s city history into our present. Elaborately researched facts and entertaining stories are staged by professional actors. They take the visitor into a long forgotten world full of life and fate. City history can be experienced and felt up close.
Executioners, whores, witches, what did these three “professional groups” have in common in Munich? Well, executioners in Munich’s early history not only had their field of activity in the Fragstatt and on the Galgenbergl, they were also the pimps! This popular city tour revolves around witch hunts, prostitution, torture and executions. For example, why do witches fly on a broomstick? And why was the main place outside the city?
Our city tour begins at Neuhauser Tor, where the delinquents were led to execution from the city. Via the historical salt road we get to the former Jesuit college, directly in the time of the witch hunts. A discussion between the Duchess Renata and the Jesuit priest Ignatius takes us to the dark 16th century: When the tower collapsed during the construction of the Church of St. Michael, it was clear “that such damned thunderstorms are caused by the wicked wicked women”.
But not only witches were executed, we hear the sad story of the unfortunate goldsmith at the beautiful tower.
A strong gust of wind leads us as part of the city tour to Munich’s landmark, the Frauenkirche, where we meet the bodily ones themselves: we learn why the devil helped the builder to build this church and why it is so windy here, as well as the answer to that global question, what shoe size the devil has.
The witch stories tell of witch’s ointments, broom rides, toad’s tongue and children’s hands, which take us to the magnificent courtyard where the alchemist Marco Bragadino is waiting for us. The alleged gold maker tries to make his art tasty. In 1591 he was executed on the Munich market square, the executioner had to strike five times until he had separated his head from his torso! At the same time, the renowned women’s shelter was closed in Munich, prostitution had a difficult time in the age of the Counter-Reformation.
At the Old Town Hall we cross the former torture chamber with gruesome stories on our city tour and reach the Old Court, where the Wittelsbach Prince Albrecht introduces us to his bride Agnes Bernauer.
The Bernau woman’s judicial murder finally leads us from the gloomy Middle Ages to the recent past, the 1970s. Up until the 1972 Olympics, the Platzl was home to the Munich red light district, which the Spider Murphy gang sang in the “scandal in the restricted area”.
