Featuring 43 bells and 32 figures, the Clock Tower is one of Munich’s most famous attractions. Hear your guide recount two historical events depicted by the wooden figurines at specific times. Just a step away, you’ll find St. Peter’s, the city’s oldest Catholic church. Be sure to catch a glimpse of the double towers of the Frauenkirche cathedral, Munich’s largest church, known for the “devil’s footprint” and its dark legend. Follow your guide to Odeonsplatz to learn about the Beer-Hall Putsch and the dramatic night when two thousand men, led by Adolf Hitler, marched to the center of Munich in an attempt to seize power. Pass by the baroque Theatine Church, built by the Elector of Bavaria, Ferdinand Maria, and his wife as a gesture of thanks for the birth of their long-awaited heir, Prince Max Emanuel. You’ll also see Ludwigstrasse, a neo-classical street home to the State Library, Munich’s oldest university, and the Gate of Victory. Return to the center at Max-Joseph-Square to admire the Opera, the National Theater, and the Royal Palace, the Residence, the former palace of the Bavarian monarchs and the largest palace in Germany. Conclude your tour at the royal brewery, the Hofbrauhaus, established in 1589 and considered the mothership of all beer halls worldwide. Additional Information

Munich is a city that boasts more than ancient Gothic architecture, traditional beer halls, Lederhosen, and the celebrated FC Bayern Munich football club. As the capital of Bavaria, it’s also a trove of less famous tales and indigenous lore. Absorb the romantic tale of King Ludwig I’s relationship with Lola Montez, a dancer who sparked a Revolution, not to mention accounts of the ‘Mad King’ Ludwig II - one of Germany’s most misunderstood monarchs. Also included is the intriguing tale of a craftsman named Georg Elser, who attempted to halt WWII by devising a plan to eliminate Adolf Hitler.

Here’s a taste of what will be revealed:
• The romantic escapade of King Ludwig I and Lola Montez
• The bond between King Ludwig II and Richard Wagner
• Hitler and the Third Reich
• ‘White Rose’, a covert resistance group set up by Munich students
• Georg Elser, a craftsman who sought to assassinate Hitler using a bomb concealed in a beer hall to stop the onset of WWII
• The tale of how the Devil contributed to the building of Munich’s Cathedral
• The evolution of beer
• The foundation of Munich

Delightful private walking tour of Munich (from middle ages to present) - Had a lovely walking tour this Sunday with Monika. She picked me up from my hotel, ran through the itinerary, and then we began our 2+ hour excursion. Since there is SO MUCH history and SO MANY buildings in Munich, Monika helped prioritize the oldest churches/city buildings/and squares with a map that showed how the city has transformed from Middle Ages to present. The pictures also helped me visualize what the count princes, popes, and other significant characters looked like in their time period. The time flew by and I felt like we covered a lot of the Holy Roman Empire Catholicism vs. Protestantism history along with the World War II Nazi Germany history. Fabulous woman who didn't rush and always checked in to make sure that I having fun. Highly recommend her!
