Highlights
  • Nagoya Castle - Situated in the center of Nagoya, Nagoya Castle is renowned for its golden shachihoko (a mythical creature with a tiger’s head and carp’s body) figures on the roof. Built in 1521 by Ieyasu Tokugawa, the first shogun of the Edo shogunate, the main structure was reconstructed after the war. Visitors can now ascend to the top and experience the feeling of being a shogun overseeing the country.

  • Atsuta Jingu Shrine - Atsuta Jingu Shrine, established in the 8th century, holds the second highest rank among Japan’s shrines. Nestled within a vast area of dense woods amidst Nagoya’s urban environment, it attracts numerous visitors seeking various forms of prayer. The sacred and reverent atmosphere of the woods evokes a sense of divinity within.

  • Chubu Denryoku MIRAI TOWER - The Chubu Electric MIRAI TOWER, formerly known as the Nagoya TV Tower (名古屋テレビ塔, Nagoya Terebi-tō), is a prominent TV tower in central Nagoya and a notable landmark of the city.

  • Nagoya City Science Museum - Home to the world’s largest planetarium, the Nagoya City Science Museum offers an immersive experience of being an astronaut exploring the universe.

  • Nagoya City Art Museum - Opened in 1987, the Nagoya City Art Museum (Nagoya-shi Bijutsukan) features a permanent collection of Surrealist art from around the world, including works by Sean Scully, Kansuke Yamamoto, and Alexander Calder, along with temporary exhibits. Additionally, the Nagoya Museum of Fine Arts (Nagoya Bosuton Bijutsukan), a sister museum to Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts, is notable for showcasing Impressionist and other artworks from Boston’s collection.

  • Tokugawa Garden - Tokugawa Garden is a traditional Japanese garden centered around a pond, reflecting the mainstream style of major daimyo gardens during the Edo period.

  • Tokugawa Art Museum - Located on the former Ōzone Shimoyashiki estate in Nagoya, the Tokugawa Art Museum (徳川美術館, Tokugawa Bijutsukan) is a private museum housing over 12,000 items, including swords, armor, Noh costumes and masks, lacquer furniture, and Chinese and Japanese ceramics, calligraphy, and paintings from the Song and Yuan dynasties (960-1368).

  • Toyota Commemorative Museum of Industry and Technology - Established in June 1994, 100 years after the birth of Toyota Motor’s founder, Toyoda Kiichiro, the museum will celebrate its 30th anniversary in June 2024. The museum aims to address new challenges in an uncertain world, such as those posed by the COVID pandemic, while honoring its origins. It serves as a place to learn about the history of manufacturing (“monozukuri”) and aims to contribute to the development of a sustainable society.

  • Noritake no Mori - Renowned in the ceramics industry, Noritake is a prestigious brand known for its high-quality, elegant tableware. Established in 1904, Noritake combines traditional Japanese craftsmanship with Western aesthetics to create formal and casual dinnerware for the European market.

  • Osu Shopping Street - Once Nagoya’s premier entertainment district, Osu is now a bustling area with extensive shopping arcades. Post-war, it developed into a hub for electronics and second-hand clothing stores, and today it is a center for nerd, idol, and other sub-cultures. Shoppers can find a variety of unique items, from anime merchandise to trendy fashions, antiques, and more. The area features over 1,200 stores, many offering Duty Free services for tourists.

  • Shirotori Garden - Shirotori Garden, or the White Bird Gardens, is a serene traditional Japanese garden spanning 3.7 hectares. The garden’s changing scenery with the tides, sunlight, and seasons offers a different experience with each visit.

  • sky-promenade - Midland Square, named after the Chubu region, stands 247 meters tall with 47 floors above ground and six basement levels. Located just outside JR Nagoya Station, it is the tallest building in the Chubu region and the seventh tallest in Japan (as of 2015).

  • Shikemichi - Shikemichi is a historic merchant town on the west bank of the Horikawa River, established in 1610 during the construction of Nagoya Castle. The town’s name, meaning a 7-meter-wide street, reflects its expansion for fire protection and commercial activities after a fire in 1700. The area, with its stone-walled storehouses and traditional townhouses, was designated a townscape preservation area in 1986.

  • Wakamiya Hachimansha Shrine - Dedicated to Emperor Nintoku, Emperor Ojin, and the legendary Takeuchinosukune, Wakamiya Hachimansha Shrine was designated by Tokugawa Ieyasu as Nagoya’s main tutelary deity in 1610. The shrine hosts various festivals, including the Wakamiya Festival on May 15-16 and the harikuyo festival, a memorial for broken needles.

Fantastic Local Guide Made Our Day in Nagoya, Japan - My wife & I had a wonderful experience with our guide in Nagoya, Japan. Tomoko Tabata was the best guide we had in our 12 days of guided tours in Japan. She was very well prepared for the tour & used her iPad to provide helpful background info about Japanese history related to Nagoya Castle. Tomoko is an extremely knowledgeable, skilled and friendly guide who helped us understand what we were seeing in beautiful Nagoya. We will never forget our day among the cherry blossoms at Nagoya Castle.

Wonderful experience! - Loved this tour and you will too! Excellent historical significance. Some of the compound is original and the part that was destroyed in the war was meticulously rebuilt. Tour guide was very informative and friendly.

Yuumi-tour of Noritake museum and gardens in Nagoya! - Viator had seemed to struggle to find a guide for our half-day tour, but persevered and found our guide, Yuumi - and what a fabulous guide they found for us! We wanted just to cover the Noritake museum and gardens in our half-day in Nagoya and Yuumi had prepared pictures and diagrams to give us important context before we arrived on site and this made the tour a really great one! Yuumi had relevant explanations for any questions that we had and, as we found out a bit later, demonstrated her wealth of experience that she has in tour-guiding. All six of us were looking forward to our Noritake tour - Yuumi made it such an enriching, enjoyable and memorable tour - we cannot thank you enough for your care for us - thanks a million Yuumi!

Nagoya Walking Tour. - Had a fantastic walking tour with Enomoto Masatake (Matt). Were taught a great deal about Shinto beliefs and practices which have stood us in good stead when visiting other shrines. He was informative and made our trip easier by pre-purchasing subway tickets for us. The walking was not hard. Would thoroughly recommend this tour.
