Highlights
  • Takayama - Step back in time to Edo-period Japan in Takayama and the UNESCO-listed Shirakawa-go village. Enjoy lunch at your own expense in Takayama, a town brimming with fascinating sights and serving as the gateway to the Japanese Alps. Don’t miss the Sanmachi Suji District, which features three streets in the heart of Takayama’s Edo town, just east of the Miya-gawa River. These streets are adorned with traditional houses, shops, restaurants, sake breweries, and cafes.
  • Koshiyama - As part of your journey, delight in a delicious Japanese-style teppanyaki set lunch at the esteemed Koshiyama restaurant in Shirakawa-go. Savor the local specialty, Japanese Beef ‘Hida Gyu,’ raised in Gifu Prefecture and celebrated for its rich marbling and exquisite flavor. Alternatively, you can choose the Oden lunch, a comforting and flavorful dish with ingredients simmered in a savory broth. Both options showcase the authentic flavors of the region and offer a delightful culinary experience.
  • Shirakawago - Next, head to the renowned Shirakawa-go to explore the historic gassho-zukuri (thatch-roofed) style houses that populate this mountain village. Surrounded by rice paddies, you can hear the sounds of insects and birds if you listen closely. Located in a mountainous area that was isolated from the rest of the world for a long time, these villages with their Gassho-style houses thrived on the cultivation of mulberry trees and the rearing of silkworms. The large houses with their steeply pitched thatched roofs are unique in Japan. Despite economic changes, the villages of Ogimachi, Ainokura, and Suganuma are remarkable examples of a traditional way of life perfectly adapted to the environment and people’s social and economic conditions.

Shiragawago+Takayama+Hida Beef Lunch - It was a fun way to explore the 2 places with bus, nice scenery along the way. Shiragawago is tranquil, country lifestyles and serene, while Takayama is more commercial, a few walking streets with many sake tasting and F&B outlets. The Hida Beef lunch (optional) was very good. The bus was very clean and comfortable, the guide Miss Guo and the driver were both friendly and professional. Guide Miss Guo explained in details on the bus and we were on our own at the destination and able to get back to the bus on time. Overall is a good and valuable trip.

Don’t expect the your to be flexible… - I contacted the your to make sure that I can be dropped off of the tour at Takayama instead of returning to Nagoya. It was confirmed before I trip. But the itinerary was reversed and on the your day, the local tour guide told me that they are stopping at Takayama as the 1st part and not at the end of the tour before returning to Nagoya. So my plan was all messed up. Luckily, the Japan VIP tour allowed me to get a refund and dropped us at Takayama at the beginning of the tour. The local tour guide (Alan) made sure we got to our hotel at Takayama…Very kind of him!
