Nairobi National Park stands as a distinctive ecosystem due to its position as the only protected world-space located in proximity to a capital city. The park finds itself a mere 7 km away from the centre of Nairobi city. The park is adorned with various types of vegetation that together form its savannah ecosystem. It is predominantly covered by open grass plains fringed with scattered acacia bushes. A highland dry forest and a perennial river with a riverine forest fills the western side of the park. Essential wildlife dispersal areas such as the Athi-Kapiti Plains and the Kitengela migration corridor are situated to the south, proving crucial during the rainy period. The presence of man-made dams within the park adds a new habitat that bears favourability to certain bird species and other water-dependent creatures. The Black rhino, lion, leopard, cheetah, hyena, buffaloes, Giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, elands, and a wealth of diverse birdlife, with over 400 species identified so far, count as the major wildlife attractions. The park also houses other attractions such as the Ivory burning site Monument, Nairobi Safari Walk, the Orphanage and the walking trails at the hippo pools.
