Highlights
  • Lago di Nemi - Nemi is the smallest village in the regional area of the Roman castles, beautiful and famous for the abundant cultivation of strawberries and for the respective feast; unlike normal-sized strawberries, smaller strawberries are very delicious, known as “wild strawberries”, which is why farmers use them to make liqueurs and liqueur cream, recommended as an excellent aperitif or as a pastime to sweeten the palate . Nemi is famous and has been recognized for the excellent quality of hospitality and stay of tourists. Walking through the streets of the city you can visit its small shops, taste the different liqueurs and buy typical local products such as jams, cakes, ham, spicy salami, bresaola, cheese and other curiosities of the local gastronomy. Its historic center is in a beautiful panoramic position on Lake Nemi, famous because two Roman ships dating back to the times of the Emperor Caligula were found here, preserved for years in the museum of Roman ships.

Additional Information

The Roman Castles are situated roughly 30 kilometers from Rome in the ancient territory of Lazio Vetus. These are a grouping of small villages spread across a region with a volcanic origin, surrounded by lush hills, forests, and lakes. Fourteen of these villages are rich in historical significance, traditions, and cultural festivities. The term ‘Roman Castles’ can be traced back to the 14th century when many Romans sought refuge in the castles of Roman feudal families like the Savelli, Annibaldi, Orsini, and Colonna, to elude the socio-economic hardships stirred up by the confinement in Avignon. The Roman Castles are positioned in the hilly terrains of the Alban Hills, in close proximity to one another. This region offers the privilege of exploring the core hilly towns of Nemi, Ariccia, and Castel Gandolfo during a holiday. The prime economic activities in the region revolve around agriculture and viticulture, generating employment and yielding highly regarded wines.

This was awesome. Our... - This was awesome. Our tour guide was so on time, great vehicle, very kind and patient. He gave us the best tour around this cute towns. He took the time to explain the history around each one of them. He knew the vendors of every town and was patient enought to wait for us to see everything and he was always offering to take our pictures. He finished it up recommending the most wonderful restaurant in Castel Gandolfo. It was delicious. Very professional service. We are extremely pleased with this tour. Highly recommend it!!

Terrific day in the Roman countryside - Highly recommend this tour. Nemi was an interesting little town. But the high point was Castel Gandolfo and the one time Summer residence of the Pope. The audio guide tour was informative and the display of papal vehicles was a highlight. Our guide recommended lunch at Ristorante Pagnanelli where we a an excellent lunch while enjoying the magnificent lake view.
